O.Henry(1862~1910):

Americanwriterofshortstories,bestknownforhisironicplottwistsandsurpriseendings

-HewasbornonSeptember11,1862inNorthCarolina,wherehespenthischildhood.

-HewenttoTexasin1882andworkedatvariousjobs—asatellerinanAustinbank(1891~1894)andasanewspapermanfortheHoustonPost.

-In1898anunexplainedshortageintheAustinbankwaschargedtohim.Althoughmanypeoplebelievedhiminnocent,hefledtotheHonduras,butreturnedtobewithhiswife,whowasfatallyill.Heeventuallyservedthreeyearsinprison,wherehefirststartedwritingshortstories.

-UponhisreleasehesettledinNewYorkCityandbecameahighlysuccessfulandprolificcontributortovariousmagazines.Althoughhisstorieshavebeencriticizedasshallowandcontrived,O.Henrydidcatchthecolorandmovementofthecityandevidencedagenuinesympathyforordinarypeople.Hisapproximately300storiesarecollectedinCabbagesandKings(1904,TheFourMillion(1906,http:
