CorporatesocialresponsibilityisanimportantpartofMcDonald’sheritage.Wehavealongtrackrecordofindustryleadershipincommunityinvolvement,environmentalprotection,diversity,opportunity,andwealsoworkwithoursupplierstohelpimprovetheirpractices.Wearecommittedtodostillmoretoearnthetrustofourcustomersandeveryoneelseaffectedbyourbusiness.Weareproudofourlong-standingcommitmenttoaworkforcethatisdiverse.WebelieveindevelopingandmaintainingadiverseworkforcethatwillstrengthentheMcDonald'ssystem.Wenotonlyaimtocontinuebeingtheworld'scommunityrestaurant,butwewillworktocontinuebeingseenasanemployerofchoice.
CurrentlyMcDonald’sischartingacoursethatwillensurewebuildonourstrengthsandcontinuetoleadthewayinourfield.
CustomerfocusremainsacentralstrategyandwecontinuetolookatnewandinnovativewaystomakeMcDonald’sevenmoreconvenientforourcustomers.InthatregardourdecisiontorevisitourActionPlan,firstdevelopedin1998isaimedatensuringwecontinuetoaddresstheneedsofpeoplewithdisabilitieswhovisitMcDonald’srestaurants.Thisfitswellwithourstrategicapproachtothe21stcentury.
Centraltoourleadershipindiversity,McDonald’shasahighlyvisiblepositioninrelationtoequalityandwewillcontinuetoprovideopportunitiesforaverylargenumberanddiverserangeofpeopleintheAustraliancommunity.
ThroughtheemploymentofhundredsofindividualswithdisabilitiesthroughouttheMcDonald’ssysteminAustralia,wearealreadypartofanextensivenetworkofcommunityorganisations,groupsandcitizens,pro-activeinsupportingpeoplewithdisabilities.ThroughthisActionPlanwewillcontinuetobuildontheselinksaswecontinuallystrivetoachieveevenhigherlevelsofexcellenceandthroughourdrivetoensureMcDonald’sismoreaccessibletoallpeople.
Thedecisionswetaketodaywillreflectthebusinessimperativeswecurrentlyface,aswellasthelonger-termconsiderationsfortheMcDonald’ssystem.InthisregardourActionPlancommitsustoprovidingaccessandfacilitiesforpeoplewithdisabilitiesinnewMcDonald’slocationsaswellasasustainableprogrammeofimprovements,wherefeasible,atexistingsites.
Inaddition,throughournationallyaccreditedemployeetraininganddevelopmentprogrammes,wewillheightenawarenessofdisabilityissuesamongstallourfrontlineemployeestoensurecustomerswithdisabilitiesreceivehelpfulandrespectfulservice.
Tothatendwehaverecentlysignedthe“EmploymentCharterforPeoplewithaDisability”whichgoestoalotoftheissuescontainedintheourplansuchasstaffawareness,workexperienceandmoreinvolvementwithdisability.
WearealsoaFoundationCharterMemberofEmployersMakingADifferenceInc–TheAustralianEmployers’NetworkonDisability,whichisaboutmakingbusinessawareofthebenefitsofemployingpeoplewithadisability.WewereinvitedtotakeupaseatontheEmployersMakingADifferenceboardofdirectorsandwereinvolvedinthemakingofavideoforEmployersMakingADifferencewhichfacestheissuefromtheperspectiveofwhatbusinessleadersthinkpeoplewithdisabilitiescanbringtoabusiness.
Inaddition–wereceivecontinuousrecognitionforouroutstandingcommitmenttoemploymentopportunitiesforpeoplewithadisability.
Wehavemademuchprogressbutweacknowledgethetaskaheadisstillsignificantandwillpresentitsownchallengesinanenvironmentofincreasingmarketcompetition.Butasmanyofouractionshaveshown,wearecommittedtoitandlookforwardtopositiveoutcomesforallourcustomersandemployees.WerecogniseandacceptourleadershippositionandtogetherwithothermembersoftheAustralianEmployers’NetworkonDisability(EmployersMakingADifference)wewillcontinuecontributingtowardstheunderstandingbybusinessasawhole,ofthemultiplebenefitsofemployingpeoplewithadisability.

1.1Overview
TheMcDonald’ssystemisthelargestquickservicerestaurantoperationinAustraliaandhasasignificantimpactonthenationaleconomy.AnAustraliansubsidiaryoftheUSCorporation,McDonald’sAustraliacommencedoperationsinNSWin1971andhastodateopenedmorethan730restaurantsnationwide.McDonald’sisarguablythelargestemployerofyouthinAustralia,oneofthelargestpurchasersofrawmaterialsandageneroussponsorinthecommunity.TheopeningofaMcDonald’srestaurantcreatesupto70newjobsinalocalarea.Italsocreatesmanyopportunitiesforthelocalconstructionandbuildingindustry,stimulatingthegrowthofnumeroussmallbusinessesthroughsub-contractingrelationships.TheimpactofMcDonald’scanbeseenintheevolutionofourlocalindustriesfromagriculturetoequipment.NewproductsarebeingdevelopedinAustraliafromspeciallygrownpotatoesandtomatoestostateoftheartmachineryandequipmentandmanyofoursuppliershavetakentheopportunitytoextendtheirsuccessinAustraliatonewexportmarketsinAsiaandthePacific.Thelastyearhasalsoseenourcommitmenttoahealthierlifestylethroughanewmenuslaunch“SaladsPlus”andwehavealsorecentlyintroducedabreakfastoptionforcustomersofcerealsandfruit.
1.2FranchiseOperations
McDonald’siswidelyrecognizedasthemostsuccessfulfranchiseorganizationintheworld.Over490AustralianMcDonald’sbusinessesareownedandoperatedbyFranchisees(orLicenseesastheyarealsocalled).Franchiseesareindividualbusinessmenandwomenwhoinvestandwork"handson"intheirownMcDonald’srestaurant.ThesuccessofthesystemliesintheentrepreneurialskillsandindividualcommitmentFranchiseesbringtotheMcDonald’sorganisation.ItisalsoalongtermrelationshipLicenseesenterintowithMcDonald’s;mostofourfranchiseagreementsarefora20yearterm.Aslocalbusinessowners,Franchiseesaretypicallyactivemembersoftheircommunityandsupportawiderangeofgroupsandorganisations.Theirbusinessesoftenprovidejobopportunitiesforyouthintheirareaandtheyarewell-respectedemployersandtrainersofthoseyoungpeople.McDonald’sFranchiseescomefromavarietyofbackgroundsoutsidetheMcDonald’ssystemaswellasfromtheranksofemployeeswhohaveworkedrightthroughthebusiness,forexample,from15yearold"crew"memberstoOwnersofMcDonald’srestaurants.

InitsownrightMcDonald'sAustraliaLimitedoperatesover235McDonald’srestaurants.OperationsstaffaretrainedanddevelopedincompanyownedrestaurantsandfeedtheranksoffieldandtrainingstaffthatprovidesupporttoLicenseeownedandoperatedbusinesses.Infactmanycorporateemployees,includingmiddleandseniormanagement,commencedtheircareersinrestaurantoperations,manycombininghighereducationwithworkandjoiningheadofficedepartmentssuchasaccounting,marketing,peopleresources,informationtechnologyandlegal.WhilstfranchisingisakeytoMcDonald’ssuccess,astrongcompanyrestaurantbaseisalsoextremelyimportanttothestrengthofthesystem.
2.DisabilityDiscrimination
2.1Alignmentwiththeobjectivesofthedisabilitydiscriminationact,1992(DDA)
TheobjectivesoftheCommonwealthDisabilityDiscriminationAct,1992,whichcameintoeffectinMarch1993,canbesummarisedasfollowsto:
∙eliminatediscrimination(asfaraspossible)onthegroundofdisability-inwork,accommodation,education,accesstopremisesandprovisionofgoods,servicesandfacilities;and
∙promoterecognitionandacceptanceinthecommunitythatpersonswithdisabilitieshavethesamefundamentalrightsastherestofthecommunity.
TheeliminationofdiscriminationandthepromotionofequalopportunitiesforallpeopleareelementsofthecorporateculturewithinMcDonald'sAustralia.Inparticular,throughbothcompanyandLicenseeownedMcDonald’sbusinesses,wehavebeenrecognisedforourinvolvementincommunitynetworkssupportingpeoplewithdisabilities,particularlythroughtheprovisionofemploymentopportunities.Indeedmanypeoplewithdisabilities,youngpeopleinparticular,haveobtainedworkexperienceandjobswithusandhavebecomevaluedmembersofstaffatMcDonald’srestaurantsaroundthecountry.
2.2Electiontodevelopanactionplanundertheact
Consistentwithourcorporatevalues,McDonald’shaselectedtodevelopanActionPlantomeettherequirementsoftheDDA.TheobjectivesoftheActionPlanaresetoutinSection4.ofthisdocument.Inaddition,inaccordancewiththeDDA,theActionPlanincludesthe:
∙devisingofpoliciesandprogramstoachievetheobjectsoftheAct;
∙communicationofpoliciesandprogramswithintheMcDonald’ssysteminAustralia;
∙reviewofpracticeswithintheMcDonald’ssystemwithaviewtotheidentificationofanydiscriminatorypractices;
∙settingofgoalsandtargetstoassessachievementoftheobjectsoftheAct;
∙meansofevaluatingpoliciesandprogramsdevelopedtomeettheobjectsoftheAct;and
∙appointmentofpersonstoimplementtheActionPlan.
ThedetailsoftheActionPlanarecontainedinSections3.and4.ofthisdocument.
SincethelodgementofourfirstDisabilityActionPlanin1998,wehaveprogressivelyworkedtowardsensuringthatMcDonald’sAustraliaoperatesat‘bestpractice’levelinrelationtocustomersandemployeeswithadisabili
