  Today,wearelaunchingacampaigncalledHeForShe.

  I'mreachingouttoyoubecauseweneedyourhelp.

  Wewanttoendgenderinequalityandtodothis,weneedeveryoneinvolved.

  ThisisthefirstcampaignofitskindattheUN.

  Wewanttotryandgalvanizeasmanymenandboysaspossibletobeadvocatsforchangeandwedon'tjustwanttotalkaboutit.Wewanttotryandmakesurethatit'stangible.

  IwasappointedasGoodwillAmbassadorforUNWomensixmonthsagoandthemoreI'vespoken

  aboutfeminism,themoreIhaverealizedthefightingforwomen'srightshastoooftenbecomesynonymouswithman-hating.IfthereisonethingIknowforcertainitisthatthishastostop.

  Fortherecord,feminism,bydefinition,isthebeliefthatmenandwomenshouldh-aveequalrightsandopportunities.

  Itisthetheoryofthepolitical,economic,andsocialequalityofthesexes.

  Istartedquestioninggender-basedassumptionsalongtimeago.

  WhenIwas8,Iwasconfusedbeingcalled"bossy"becauseIwantedtodirecttheplaysthatwewouldputonforourparents.buttheboyswerenot.Whenat14,Istartedtobesexualizedbycertainelementsofthemedia.Whenat15,mygirlfriendsstarteddroppingoutoftheirbelovedsportsteamsbecausetheydidn'twanttoappear"muscley".Whenat18,mymalefriendswereunabletoexpresstheirfeelings.

  IdecidedthatIwasafeminist.Andthisseemsuncomplicatedtome.

  Butmyrecentresearchhasshownmethatfeminismhasbecomeanunpopularword.Womenare

  choosingnottoidentifyasfeminists.

  Apparently,I'mamongtheranksofwomenwhoseexpressionsareseenastoostrongtooaggressive,isolating,andanti-menunattractive,even.

  Whyhasthewordbecomesuchanuncomfortableone

  IamfromBritain.

  AndIthinkitisrightthatIampaidthesameasmymalecounterparts.

  IthinkitisrightthatIshouldbeabletomakedecisionsaboutmyownbody.

  Ithinkitisrightthatwomenbeinvolvedonmybehalfinthepoliciesandthedecisionsthatwillaffectmylife.

  IthinkitisrightthatsociallyIamaffordedthesamerespectasmen.

  Butsadly,Icansaythatthereisnoonecountryintheworldwhereallwomencanexpecttoreceivetheserights.

  Nocountryintheworldcanyetsaythattheyhaveachievegenderequality.

  TheserightsIconsidertobehumanrights.

  ButIamoneoftheluckyones.

  Mylifeisasheerprivilege

  becausemyparentsdidn'tlovemelessbecauseIwasbornadaughter.

  MyschooldidnotlimitmebecauseIwasagirl.

  Mymentorsdidn'tassumethatIwillgolessfarbecauseImightgivebirthtoachildoneday.TheseinfluenceswerethegenderequalityambassadorsthatmademewhoIamtoday.

  Theymaynotknowit,thattheyaretheinadvertentfeministswhoarechangingtheworldtoday.Weneedmoreofthose.

  Andifyoustillhatetheword,itisnotthewordthatisimportant.

  It'stheideaandtheambitionbehindit.

  BecausenotallwomenhavereceivedthesamerightsthatIhave.

  Infact,statistically,veryfewhavebeen.

  In1997,HillaryClintonmadeafamousspeechinBeijingaboutwomen'srights.

  Sadly,manyofthethingsthatshewantedtochangearestilltruetoday.

  I'veseenyoungmensufferingfrommentalillness

  unabletoaskforhelp,forfearitwouldmakethemlessofamen,orlessofaman.

  Infact,intheU.K.,suicideisthebiggestkillerofmen,between20to49

  eclipsingroadaccidents,cancerandcoronaryheartdisease.

  I'veseenmenmadefragileandinsecurebyadistortedsenseofwhatconstitutesmalesuccess.

  Mendon'thavethebenefitsofequality,either.

  Wedon'toftentalkaboutmenbeingimprisonedbygenderstereotypesbutIcanseethattheyare.Andthatwhentheyarefree,thingswillchangeforwomenasanaturalconsequence.

  Ifmendon'thavetobeaggressiveinordertobeaccepted

  womenwon'tfeelcompelledtobesubmissive.

  Ifmendon'thavetocontrol,womenwon'thavetobecontrolled.

  Bothmenandwomenshouldfeelfreetobesensitive.

  Bothmenandwomenshouldfeelfreetobestrong.

  Itistimethatweallperceivegenderonaspectruminsteadoftwosetsofopposingideals.(Applause)

  IfwestopdefiningeachotherbywhatwearenotandstartdefiningourselvesbywhowearewecanallbefreerandthisiswhatHeForSheisabout.

  It'saboutfreedom.

  Iwantmentotakeupthismantle

  sothattheirdaughters,sistersandmotherscanbefreefromprejudice

  butalsosothattheirsonshavepermissiontobevulnerableandhuman,too

  Weclaimthosepartsofthemselvestheyabandoned.

  Andindoingso,beamoretrueandcompleteversionofthemselves.

  Andit'sareallygoodquestion.

  I'vebeenaskingmyselfthesamething.

  AllIknowisthatIcareaboutthisproblemandIwanttomakeitbetter.

  八岁时,我不懂为什么想要导演学校里呈现给家长看的舞台剧,会让我被认为「专横」,但男孩们却不会被如此认为。

十四岁时,媒体开始戴上有色眼镜看待我部分的特质;十五岁时,我的女生好友们开始停止参加她们热爱的运动,因为她们不想要变得「满身肌肉」;十八岁时,我的男性朋友们无法表达他们的真实感觉。

因为这些事情,我决定做一个女性主义者,对我来说这非常单纯,但最近我发现女性主义成为了一个不受欢迎的字眼。
