Whenwegetbacktoourhistory,thereisaclassicstoryaboutwaterconservancythatisDaYu’SSuccessfulRegulatingofFloodwaters.

YutheGreatwasthechieftainofthelegendaryXiahouclan.HewasoriginallycalledYuorXiayu.Accordingtolegend,theYellowRiverfloodedduringthereignofEmperorYao,andthepeoplewereforcedtoabandontheirvillages,andgotoliveintreesoronmountaintops.Thefloodbroughtgreatmiserytothepeople.

EmperorYao,thechieftainoftheYan-Huangtribalalliance,appointedGuntoharnesstheflood.Gunbuiltdikestokeepbackthewater,butfailed.shun,whosucceededYao,killedGun,andappointedGun'ssonYutocontinuewiththeflood-harnessingwork.Yuadoptedthedredgingmethodtoleadthefloodwaterstoflowalongrivercoursesintothesea.Yuworkedveryhard.Itwassaidthatduringthe13yearshespenttamingthefloods,hepassedhishomethreetimes,butdidnotenteruntilhistaskwascompleted.
