sentenceisunderlined.Beneatheachsentenceyouwillfindfivewaysof
phrasingtheunderlinedpart.ChoiceArepeatstheoriginal;theotherfour
aredifferent.
Choosetheanswerthatbestexpressesthemeaningoftheoriginal
sentence.Ifyouthinktheoriginalisbetterthananyofthealternatives,
chooseit;otherwisechooseoneoftheothers.Yourchoiceshouldproduce

yourguide.RememberthatthissectionoftheSATtestsyourknowledgeof
standardwrittenEnglish.
Inthischapter,wereinforceyourunderstandingoftherulesofstandardwrittenEnglish.Knowingtherulesgivesyouastrongfoundationagainstwhichtocheckthesignalsyoureargivesyouthatsomethinginthesentenceiswrong.Inthesamplesentenceabove,youmightimmediatelynoticethecombinedproblemofwordinessandfaultyparallelism¡ªthephrasebutforherbeingaparticipant
shouldberewritteninamorecompactforminwhichallthedifferent
componentsofthesentencealign,orflowtogether,correctly(moreon
parallelismbelow).
Evenifyoudon’tcomeupwiththespecifictermwordiness,youmighthavethesensethatsomethingabouttheunderlinedpartisvagueandabitconvoluted.
