　　在房舍的阴影中，在阳光照耀下的河岸边，在泊岸的小船旁，在柳树林和无花果树的浓荫里，悉达多，英俊的婆罗门之子，年少的雄鹰，与挚友侨文达一同长大。

在河岸边，在神圣的祭祀和沐浴中，阳光晒黑了他浅色的臂膀。

芒果林中，在孩童的嬉戏间，在母亲的歌声和神圣的祭祀中，在聆听博学父亲的教诲和智者的谈话时，树影流入了他幽黑的眼眸。

悉达多早已加入了智者们的谈话，与侨文达一道修习辩论、静思与禅定的技艺。

他已经学会如何默念“唵”--这真言之本;吸气时默默吸入它，呼气时则凝神默默吐出它，此刻，他的前额仿佛放射出纯净思索的心灵之光。

他已学会如何在自我存在的深层体认识阿特曼--永恒不坏，与宇宙合一。

　　他的母亲满怀幸福地看着自己的儿子，注视着他坐落、起立和行走，强壮英俊的悉达多，四肢修长，体态完美地向母亲问安。

　　每当悉达多走过城里的街巷，年轻的婆罗门女子心中就会泛起阵阵爱的涟漪;他有着高高的前额，王者般的眼神，还有隽削的背景。

　　他举止美雅，为所有的人所爱，使所有的人快乐，而他的心中却没有快乐。

梦境和不安宁的思绪从流动的河水，从夜晚闪烁的群星，从太阳的光芒中不断向他袭来。

　　他的朋友侨文达，另一位婆罗门之子，对他的敬爱超过了其他任何人。

他爱悉达多的眼光与和蔼的嗓音;他爱他走路的姿态与行动的完美文雅;他爱悉达多的一切所言所行，然而他最爱他的精神、他那高尚而热切的思想、他炽热的意志和崇高的使命。

侨文达知道，悉达多决不会成为一个平庸的婆罗门，一个懒惰的献祭官，一个贪婪的咒语贩子，一个傲慢无知的雄辩家，或仅仅是羊群中愚蠢善良的一员。

而他，侨文达，也不想成为任何一类这样的人，不想成为成千上万庸庸碌碌的婆罗门中的一个。

他要追随人所爱戴的杰出的悉达多。

如果悉达多将会成为一位神，如果他将进入大光明界，那么侨文达将要跟从他，作为他的朋友、他的伙伴、他的仆人、他的卫士和他的影子。

　　但是悉达多却无法令自己喜悦快乐，他漫步在无花果园中的玫瑰小径，在林中蓝黝黝的树荫下静思，每日在赎罪池中洗浴自己的肢体，在芒果林的浓荫深处参加祭礼，他举止美雅，为所有的人所爱，使所有的人快乐，而他的心中却没有快乐。

梦境和不安宁的思绪从流动的河水，从夜晚闪烁的群星，从太阳的光芒中不断向他袭来。

迷惑与灵魂的躁动随着祭祀的烟火升起，在《梨具吠陀》的诗句中迷漫，在婆罗门长者的教义中骚动。
