Planningforthebridgebeganinthe1920swhentheareaaroundSanFranciscowasgrowing.Peoplelivingintheareaneededanotherwaytogettothecitybesidessmallferries(渡船).

JosephStrausswasthechiefengineerfortheproject.Workbeganin1934.Mr.Straussdemandedthestrongestsafetyprotectionsinthehistoryofbridgebuilding.Theseincludedthefirstuseof“hardhats”toprotecttheworkers'headsandspecialglassestoprotecttheireyes.

Aspecialsafetynetwassuspended(挂)underthebridge.Thisnetsavedthelivesof19menduringtheconstruction.However,11otherworkerswerekilledwhentheyfellfromthebridgethroughthenet.Still,thiswasanewsafetyrecordforthetime.

Johnsonworkedasabossatatechnologycompany.In1871,hehiredayoungmantoworkforhim.Theman'snamewasThomasEdison.Edisonwasagreatworker.Hecameupwithmanynewideas.Later,Edisonlefttostarthisowncompany.Johnsonfollowedhim.JohnsonstartedturningEdison'sideasintomoney.In1880,Edisoninventedthelightbulb.Nooneknewhowmuchitwasworth.Atthetime,mosthomesdidnothavetheelectricitytopowerit.However,Johnsonhelpedstartacompanytosellthebulbs.

Beforelong,Mr.Johnsonhadabrightidea.Christmastreeswereverypopular.Theyweresobeautifulbecauseoftheircandles.Flickering(闪烁的)flameswereperfectforChristmas.Buttheywerealsodangerous.Theycouldeasilystartafire.
