This,however,isnotsustainablegrowthpattern,especiallywhenChinahastheworld’slargestpopulationtofeed.Soconcernedurbanplannersarestartingtonotethesocialandphysicaleffectsofdiaspora(大移居)whenreplacedruralcommunitiesareforcedintothecities.

Ontheotherhand,atrendofthoughtisgraduallytakingshapeandthisistheconceptofthe“gardencity”,acombinationofcountryandcitythatisbeingproposedbyarchitectsandcityplanners.HuaLi,fromTaoArchitects,isamongthemanyprofessionalswithsuchavoice.Hisargumentissupportedbyalong-termstudyonthissubject.AsHuasays,theansweristopreservepatchesofproductivefarmlandwithinurbanboundaries.Lesstransportationmeanswehavefreshagriculturalproductsatlowercostsandlesscarbonemissioninthecity.Andurbanfarmlandcanalsobeshowcasedforagriculturaltourismandeducation.
