WhenIfirstheardabouttheimprovisation(即兴表演)class,Iwashesitating.Asaquietandshygirl,Ifearedtoimproviseinfrontofstrangers.However,IknewIwantedtoworkasasciencecommunicatorafterfinishingmyPhD,soitseemedlikeaperfectopportunitytolearnhowtospeakandcommunicatewithotherseffectively.Isignedup,knowingtheexperiencewouldgivemehelp.

Notallanimalsaresoaggressivetowardtheirailingneighbors.Sometimesit'sassimpleasavoidingthosewhomayinfectyou.

WhenKiesecker,aleadscientistinAmerica,studiedtheAmericanbullfroginthelate1990s,hefoundthatbullfrogscouldnotonlydetectadeadlysmellofinfectioninotherbullfrogs,buthealthymembersactivelyavoidedthosethatweresick.Bullfrogsrelyonchemicalsignalstodeterminewhoissickornot.

Caribbeanlobstersalsoshundiseasedmembersoftheircommunity,wellbeforetheybecomeinfectious.Ittakesabouteightweeksforlobstersinfectedwiththedeadlyvirustobecomedangeroustoothers.Normallysocialanimals,lobstersbeginkeepingawayfromthediseasedasearlyasfourweeksafterinfection—oncethelobsterscansmellcertainchemicalsreleasedbysickindividuals.
