MoststudentsinUSAtaketheSAT(knownasScholasticAptitudeTest)orACT(AmericanCollegeTesting)duringtheirfinalyearofhighschool.EachuniversitysetsaminimumSATorACTscorethatastudentmustachieveinordertogainadmission.Thesearestandardizedquantitativeexaminations.TheSATtestscriticalreading,mathematics,andwritingskills.TheACTtestsEnglish,mathematics,reading,andsciencereasoning,andincludesanoptimalwritingtest.

Extracurricularactivitiesmayincludescholasticclubs,athleticteams,studentgovernment,andphilanthropicclubs.Voluntaryparticipationinthesekindsofactivitiesisanindicationthatastudenthaslearnedvaluablelifelessons,suchasteamwork,leadership,orcivicresponsibility.

Universitystudentspursuingabachelor’sdegreearecalled“undergraduates”;studentspursuingamaster’sordoctoraldegreearecalled“graduatestudents”.

Mostuniversitiesgiveundergraduatestudentsaliberaleducation,whichmeansstudentsarerequiredtotakecoursesacrossseveraldisciplinesbeforetheyspecializeinamajorfieldofstudy.Graduateandprofessionalprograms,suchasmedicineorlaw,arespecialized.Alldegreeprogramsrequirestudentstocompleteaminimumnumberofcredithoursinordertograduate.
