Fortheirstudy,heandhiscolleaguesrandomlydivide565preschoolersintotwogroups.Inonegroup,parentsrecordednotesaboutkids’normalTVviewing,withoutreceivinganyguidelinestoreduceorchangethosehabits.Intheothergroup,researchersmadevisitsandcallsandsentmonthlynewslettersencouragingparentstoreplaceviolentTVwitheducationalprogramming.Aftersixand12months,parentsreportedtheirkid’sangry,aggressiveoranxiousbehaviorsonaquestionnaire.Atbothtimepoints,childrenintheTVintervention(干预)programhadslightlyfewerproblemsthanthoseinthecomparisongroup.Boysinlowincomefamiliesseemedtobenefitmostfromthechangeinprogramming,theresearchersfound.

“Thepointis,thisissomethingthatisaseffectiveasotherthingswedototrytoguidebehaviorinchildren,andit’sfairlysimple,”Christakissaid.

AnotherstudypublishedinPediatricsfoundthemoreTVkidsandteenswatched,themorelikelytheyweretohaveacrimeorotherproblemsinsociety.Childrenmayimitateviolencetheysee—ormoretimeinfrontoftheTVcouldsimplymeanlesscommunicationwithpeersandfamilies,andworseperformanceinschool.

TheAmericanAcademyofPediatricsrecommendskidswatchnomorethanonetotwohoursofhighqualityprogrammingeachday.Researchersagreedparentsshouldbemindfulofwhatexactlytheiryoun
