1.1FunctionFulfilledbytheScreed

Thescreed,theroadpaver‘sworkingtool,fulfilsthefunctionofuniformlycompactingthepavingmaterialacrosstheentirepavewidthandproducingaclose-texturedandlevelsurface.Thescreed‘scompactingsystemsshallpre-compactthemixtothegreatestpossibleextent.Thisistominimizetheinfluenceoflayerthicknessupontheamountofsubsequentcompactionbyrollingwhenbringingaboutthepavement’sfinaldensity.

Forpre-compaction,differentcompactingsystemsareavailable:

T=Tamper(aneccentricshaftcausesthetamperbartomoveupanddown)

V=Vibrators(vibrationsaregeneratedbyaneccentricshaftactingonthescreedplatesatrightanglestothedirectionofmotion)

P=PressureBar(s)(thepressurebar(s)arehydraulicallypressedontothemixatafrequencyof68Hz(approx.)andamaximumpressureof130bar)

P2=Screedequippedwith2PressureBar

1.2ExtendingScreedsandBolt-onExtensions

ForallVOGELEscreeds,bolt-onextensionsareavailable.TheVOGELEsystemofbolt-onextensionsallowstoeasilyandsturdilybuildupscreedstoanypavewidthdesired.Evenwhenpavinginlargewidths,VOGELEscreedsworkwithhighestprecisionandachievesuperbdegreesofuniformdensityrightuptothepavementedges.Whenfittingbolt-onextensions,caremustbetakentoensurethatthebottomedgeofthescreedplateisflushwiththeadjacentunits,otherwiseastepmaybeproducedinthepavementorthescreedplanninganglemaychange.Duringthepavingprocess,thiscanhaveanegativeeffectonpre-compaction,surfacestructureandfloatingbehaviourofthescreed.

1.3Set-UpoftheExtendingScreed

1.Positionbothextendingunitsinplacesothatthescreedplateofthebasicunitandthescreedplatesoftheextendingunitsareroughlylevel.

2.Slackenthechainsconnectingthespindlesontheextendingunitsothateachspindlecanbeadjustedindependently.

3.Carefullylowerthescreedontotheextendingunits.Timbershouldbeplacedunderthemiddleofthetwoextendingunits.

4.Nowadjustthescreedplanningangleviathetowpointramssothatthescreedplaterestsonthetimber.

5.Removethelockingscrewfromthethreadedbushonallspindles.

6.Adjustallthreadedbushes.

7.Refitthelockingscrews.

8.Raisethescreedandsecureitsothatitcannotsink.

9.Layaruleralongtheinnerandouterspindlepairsandthenadjusttheheightoftheextendingunitviathefrontandrearspindleswiththeaidofaspecialwrench,sothatthescreedplateofthebasicunitislevelwiththetrailingedgeoftheextendingunit.Nowadjusttheplanningangleoftheextendingunitviathefrontspindle.

10.Reconnectthespindlepairswiththechains.

11.Raisetheframeoftheextendingunitbyapprox.4mmsothatitroughlycorrespondstotheplanningangleofthescreed.

12.Duringthefirston-sitejob,theheightoftheextendingunitsmustbecorrecteduntilalongitudinalstepisnolongervisible.

1.4Fixed-WidthScreeds

1.4.2Fixed-WidthScreedsandBolt-onExtensions

Asageneralrule,bolt-onextensionsshouldbefittedsymmetricallyonbothsidesofthescreed,whereverpossible.TheadvantageofaFixed-WidthScreedisadeeperscreedplateof500mmcomparedtoascreedplateof250mmfoundonExtendingScreeds.Thishasapositiveeffectuponthescreed‘sfloatingbehaviour.

Moreover,theleadingedgeoftheFixed-WidthScreedformsasinglelineovertheentirepavewidthanddifferentplanninganglesdonotleavemarksinthepavement.Fixed-WidthScreedsarecapableofhandlingconsiderablylargerpavewidthsthanExtendingScreeds,albeitwithrestrictionsasregardsthescreed‘svariability.Asaresult,Fixed-WidthScreedsareparticularlysuitedtopavinglongsectionswithalarge,unchangingpavewidth.

1.4.3BuildingUpaFixed-WidthScreedwithBolt-onExtensions

Bolt-onextensionsarefittedtoenlargethescreed’swidth.Thetrailingedgesofthescreedplatesshallbeflushacrosstheentirepavewidth.Theleadingedgesofthescreedplatesshouldbesethighertowardstheoutsidebyroughly0.5mm.

Inordertopreventthebolt-onextensionsfrombendingtowardstherearasaresultofthepressureexertedbythemix,horizontalbracesmustbefitted.

Horizontalbracesaretobefittedinsuchawaythatthetrailingedgesofthescreedplatesareflush.

Tocompensatetheupliftattheouteredgesofthescreed,thereshouldbealightsagofthescreedwhenraised.Themagnitudeofthissagdependsonthepavewidth.Thesagcanbeadjustedbywayofthebracesoverthescreed’sbasicunit.

1.5Set-UpofTamper

Thetampershallbesettoanidenticalstrokelengthacrosstheentirepavewidth.Thesettingcanbechangedbysimplyturningtheeccentricbushontheshaftdrivingthetamperbar.Thedrivingshaftisaccessiblefrombehind,sothatthiscaneasilybedonebetweenjobsitesections.Adjustingthelowerreversalpointofthetamperbar,however,takesmoretime.First,thetampershieldsneeddemounting.Thenremovethescrewsonallshaftbrackets.Afterlooseningthelockingnut

(2),thetamperbarcanbeadjustedviabolt

(1).Theheighttobesetdependsonthetamperstrokeselected.

1.6Set-UpofTamperShield

Thetamper(3)mustbesetsothatitrestsonthewearstrip

(1)acrossthefullwidth.Thenadjustthespringsteelbar

(2)onthetampershieldbymeansofscrew(4)fromtherearofthescreeduntilagapof0.5-1mmisobtainedbetweentamperbarandthespringsteelbar.Releasescrews(6)andfitvarioussmallshims(5)toalignthetampershield.Withthetampershieldcorrectlyaligned,thespringsteelbar

(2)isatleastparallelwiththetamperorpreferablyinclinedslightlytothefront.Checktheclearancebetweentamperandspringsteelbarandcorrect,ifnecessary.

Tip!

Atastrokelengthof2mm,thetamperbarshouldbeflushwiththescreedplate

(checkwithyourhand).

1.7Set-UpofPressureBar(s)

1.Unscrewthenut

(2)withanti-twistdevice(3)onthehydraulicram

(1)forthepressurebar.

2.Turnthehydraulicram

(1)toadjusttheheightofthepressurebar.Theclearance(7)betweenpressurebarandbottomedgeofthescreedplateshouldbeatleast4mm.

3.Checkthatthehydraulicramforthepressurebarmakescontactwithmetalplate(5)whenretracted.

4.Setpre-tensionofspring(6)to5.5mmvianut(4)toyieldadistance(8)of59.5mm.

5.Resecurethehydraulicram(3)forthepressurebar.

1.8BevelIrons

Bevelironsshapeandcompacttheedgesofthepavement.Theyareavailablewithabeveledgeof45°and60°.Theirsizedependsonthethicknessofthelayertobepaved.Aheatingrodcanbeinstalledasanoptiontoimprovetheslidingpropertiesofthebeveliron.

1.9FunctionCheckofScreedHeating

Allscreedcomponentsincontactwiththehotmixshouldbeheatedtoapprox.90°Cbeforestartingwork.Itisrecommendedtoprotectthescreedagainstexcessivelossofheattothesurroundingssothattheheatingpowercanbeutilizedeffectively,forinstancebyputtingdownthescreed,preferablyonhotmix.Asphaltmaysticktothetamperbar,screedplatesorpressurebar(s)ifthescreedtemperatureistoolow.Thiscanleadtotheformationofstripsandanirregularsurfacetexture.Thefloatingbehaviourofthescreedmayvarybeforeitreachesitsoperatingtemperature,withtheresultthatlayerthicknessmayalsovaryanddeviatefromthedesiredone.Forthe“dash2“machines,amonitoringunitforscreedheatingisavailableasanoptionalextra.Thisfeaturemonitorseachsingleheatingrodforproperfunctionandindicatesanyfaultwithoutdelay.

Directlyafterswitchingonscreedheating,correctoperationoftheheatingrodscanbecheckedbycautiouslytouchingthetamperbar,screedplatesandpressurebar(s).
