ShelatermovedtoGhanawithhersonandworkedintheUniversityofGhana'sSchoolofMusicandDrama.ItwastherethatshebecameclosefriendswithMalcolmX.ShereturnedtotheUSin1964tohelpMalcolmXwithanewCivilRightsmovement.ShortlyaftershereturnedtotheUS,MalcolmXandDr.Kingwerebothassassinated(暗杀).Todealwiththedeathsofherfriends,shewroteherfirstbook,IKnowWhytheCagedBirdSings,whichfinallymadeherfamousaroundtheworld.The1970sweresomeofhermostproductiveyearsasawriter,poet,aswellasasinger.
