In2017,researchersinSwitzerlandcreatedacomputersystemcalled“DeepArtificialComposer”(DAC),whichcouldcreateoriginalmusicallbyitself.To“teach”theDAC,theresearcherstraineditto“listen”toover2,000differentfolksongs.Basedonthis,theAItaughtitselfhowtocreatemusic,includinggettingthetimingrightandchoosingtherightnotes.FlorianColombosaidthathisaimincreatingtheDACwastohelppeoplecreatetheirownmusic—nottohaveitmadeforthem.“Agoodcomposerwithcreativeideaswillneverbereplacedbyacomputer,”Colombostated.

Besidesmusic,AIhasenteredtheworldofpoetryaswell.InApril2018,ChineseandJapaneseresearcherscreatedanAIprogramthatusesimagestowritepoems.Inanexperiment,theAIanalysedtheshapesandcoloursinaseriesofimages,andthentranslatedthemintowordsandphrases.Thepoemswerethenshownto500humanjudges.Thejudgeswereaskedwhethertheycouldtellifthepoemswerewrittenbyahumanoracomputer.Asmanyas40percentofthejudgesmistakenlythoughtthepoemswerewrittenbyahuman.
