Refinedandsanctifiedbylongusage,idiomshavebeendescribedasthecrystallizationoflanguage.Withoutidiomsourlanguagewouldbecomedullanddry,whereasanappropriateuseoftheminourspeechandwritingwilladdtothestrengthandvividnessposedoffewwords,containanextremelyprofoundandrichmeaning;foranothermostidiomscarryavividimage.
Anidiomisafixedgroupofwordswithaspecialmeaningwhichisdifferentfromthemeaningsofthewordsthatformit.To“readabook”,forinstance,isnotanidiom,forthemeaningofthephraseisthemeaningsofthethreewordsputtogether,and“abook”canbereplacedbyotherwordslike“anewspaper”or“amagazine”.To“readbetweenthelines”isdifferent.Thefourwordsthatformtheidiomgivenohintastowhatitmeansandnoneofthewordscanbechangedtoformanotherunderstandablephrase.

Aknowledgeofvariousfiguresofspeechcommonlyusedinwritingwillhelpusnotonlytoappreciatebeautyoflanguage,butalsolearntousethevariousrhetoricalfiguresinourownwriting.

Metonymyisafigureofspeechinwhichthenameofonethingissubstitutedforanotherassociatedwithorsuggestedbyit.Thethingspokenofandthethingmeantmaybewhollyunlike,buttherelationbetweenthemissuchthatthementionofonesuggeststheother,“Thedrunkardloveshisbottle.”Herethereisnoresemblance,butverycloserelation.
Inwritingwhenmetonymyiswellemployed,brevityandvividnessmaybeachieved:
