Interestinglyenough,Japanesepoetryhashadalongandcolorfulhistory.Intheprehaikuperiodintheearlyeighthcentury,Japanesepoetswrote katauta,poemsinaquestion-and-answerform,usingtwopeople.Eachthree-lineverse(诗节)containedaboutseventeensyllablesthatcouldbedeliveredeasilyinonebreath—justasonewouldnaturallyaskoransweraquestion.ThishasremainedthebasicpatternfortraditionalJapanesepoetrythroughoutthecenturies.

Anotherformthatappearedwasthe tanka,whichcontainedfivelinesandthirty-onesyllables(5-7-5-7-7),writtenbyeitheroneortwopersons.Fromthatevolved(发展)therenga,whichcontainedmorethanoneverse,orlink.Writtenbythreeormorepeople,itcouldhaveasmanyas100links!

Thefirstverseofthe renga introducedasubject.Ithadthreelinesandwascalledthe hokku,orstartingverse. Renga partiesbecameagreatpleasure.

Around1450, haikai no renga becamepopular.Thisstyleoflinkedversecontainedpuns(双关)andwashumorousandamusing.Theopeningthreelineswerestillcalleda hokku, andfromhaikai andhokku theterm haiku evolved.
