Ullman,PhillipHamrick(anotherresearcher)andtherestoftheteamlookedatdatafrom16otherstudiesonlanguage.Theyfoundthatpeoplelearnlanguageusingtwomemorysystems:

declarative(陈述性的)andprocedural(程序性的).Memorizingvocabulary,forexample,isadeclarativememoryprocess.Butlearninggrammaris,mostly,aproceduralmemoryprocess.

“Declarativememory,inhumansatleast,iswhatwethinkofas‘learningmemory’.Suchas,‘Oh,Irememberwhatyousaidlastnight’orthingslikethat.Andproceduralmotormemoryiswhatweoftencall‘motormemory’,suchashowyoulearntorideabicycle,”saysProfessorUllman.Theseproceduralmemoryskillsbecomesodeeplylearnedthatwearenolongerawarethatwearedoingthem.

However,Ullmanexplainsthatthetwolong-termmemorysystemscansharetasks.And,headds,theadultbrainusesthesystemstolearnlanguageabitdifferentlyfromthewayachild’sbraindoesit.

“Adultlearnersofasecondlanguagetendtorelyonlearningthegrammarindeclarativememoryearlyon.Butfinally,theybecomejustlikekidslearningthegrammarandtheydependonproceduralmemory.”

Inotherwords,adultlanguagelearnersmayusetheirdeclarativememoryforusinggrammarpatterns.Theythinkaboutitonpurpose.Forachild,thegrammarmaycomemorenaturally.Theydon’thavetothinkaboutthegrammarrulesbeforespeaking.

Inastatementtoreporters,Ullmansaidhehopesthenewresearch“willleadtoexcitingadvancesinourunderstandingoflanguage,andinhowbothsecondlanguagelearningandlanguageproblemscanbeimproved.”
