Butthat'snotwhatImeanatall.Ilookatmyfriend,tryingtodecidewhattotellher.Iwanthertoknowwhatshewillneverlearninchildbirthclasses.Iwanttotellherthatthephysicalwoundsofchildbearingwillheal,butbecomingamotherwillleaveherwithanemotionalwoundsorawthatshewillbevulnerableforever.

Iconsiderwarningherthatshewillneveragainreadanewspaperwithoutthinking:

Iwantmyfriendtoknowthateverydecisionwillnolongerberoutine.Thatafive-year-oldboy'sdesiretogotothemen'sroomratherthanthewomen'satarestaurantwillbecomeamajordilemma.Theissuesofindependenceandgenderidentitywillbeweighedagainsttheprospectthatachildmolestermaybelurkinginthelavatory.Howeverdecisiveshemaybeattheoffice,shewillsecond-guessherselfconstantlyasamother.

Lookingatmyattractivefriend,Iwanttoassureherthateventuallyshewillshedtheaddedweightofpregnancy,butshewillneverfeelthesameaboutherself.Thatherownlife,nowsoimportant,willbeoflessvaluetoheronceshehasachild.Shewouldgiveitupinamomenttosaveheroffspring,butwillalsobegintohopeformoreyears—nottoaccomplishherowndreams—buttowatchherchildrenaccomplishtheirs.

Iwanttodescribetomyfriendtheexhilarationofseeingyourchildlearntohitaball.Iwanttocaptureforherthebellylaughofababywhoistouchingthesoftfurofadogforthefirsttime.Iwanthertotastethejoythatissorealithurts.

Myfriend'slookmakesmerealizethattearshaveformedinmyeyes."You'llneverregretit,"Isayfinally.Then,squeezingmyfriend'shand,Iofferaprayerforherandmeandallofthemeremortalwomenwhostumbletheirwayintothisholiestofcallings.

 

2.WhatIHaveLivedFor

Threepassions,simplebutoverwhelminglystrong,havegovernedmylife:

thelongingforlove,thesearchforknowledge,andunbearablepityforthesufferingofmankind.Thesepassions,likegreatwinds,haveblownmehitherandthither,inawaywardcourse,overagreatoceanofanguish,reachingtotheveryvergeofdespair.

Ihavesoughtlove,first,becauseitbringsecstasy-ecstasysogreatthatIwouldoftenhavesacrificedalltherestoflifeforafewhoursofthisjoy.Ihavesoughtit,next,becauseitrelievesloneliness--thatterriblelonelinessinwhichoneshiveringconsciousnesslooksovertherimoftheworldintothecoldunfathomablelifelessabyss.Ihavesoughtitfinally,becauseintheunionofloveIhaveseen,inamysticminiature,theprefiguringvisionoftheheaventhatsaintsandpoetshaveimagined.ThisiswhatIsought,andthoughitmightseemtoogoodforhumanlife,thisiswhat--atlast--Ihavefound.

WithequalpassionIhavesoughtknowledge.Ihavewishedtounderstandtheheartsofmen.Ihavewishedtoknowwhythestarsshine.AndIhavetriedtoapprehendthePythagoreanpowerbywhichnumberholdsswayabovetheflux.Alittleofthis,butnotmuch,Ihaveachieved.

Loveandknowledge,sofarastheywerepossible,ledupwardtowardtheheavens.Butalwayspitybroughtmebacktoearth.Echoesofcriesofpainreverberateinmyheart.Childreninfamine,victimstorturedbyoppressors,helplessoldpeopleaburdentotheirsons,andthewholeworldofloneliness,poverty,andpainmakeamockeryofwhathumanlifeshouldbe.Ilongtoalleviatethisevil,butIcannot,andItoosuffer.

Thishasbeenmylife.Ihavefounditworthliving,andwouldgladlyliveitagainifthechancewereofferedme

           

3.TheWholenessofLife

Anonymous

Onceacirclemissedawedge.Thecirclewantedtobewhole,soit.wentaroundlookingforitsmissingpiece.Butbecauseitwas incompleteandthereforecouldrollonlyveryslowly,itadmiredthe flowersalongtheway.Itchattedwithworms.Itenjoyedthesunshine.Itfoundlotsofdifferentpieces,butnoneofthemfit.  Soitleftthemallbythesideoftheroadandkeptonsearching.

           Thenonedaythecirclefoundapiecethatfitperfectly.Itwasso  happy.Nowitcouldbewhole,withnothingmissing.Itincorporated   themissingpieceintoitselfandbegantoroll.Nowthatitwasa perfectcircle,itcouldrollveryfast,toofasttonoticeflowers ortalktotheworms.Whenitrealizedhowdifferenttheworld seemedwhenitrolledsoquickly,itstopped,leftitsfoundpiece bythesideoftheroadandrolledslowlyaway.

Thelessonofthestory,Isuggested,wasthatinsomestrangesensewearemorewholewhenwearemissingsomething.Themanwhohaseverythingisinsomewaysapoorman.Hewillneverknowwhat itfeelsliketoyearn,tohope,tonourishhissoulwiththedreamofsomethingbetter.Hewillneverknowtheexperienceofhaving someonewholoveshimgivehimsomethinghehasalwayswantedorneverhad.

      Thereisawholenessaboutthepersonwhohascometotermswithhislimitations,whohasbeenbraveenoughtoletgoofhisunrealisticdreamsandnotfeellikeafailurefordoingso.There isawholenessaboutthemanorwomanwhohaslearnedthatheorshe isstrongenoughtogothroughatragedyandsurvive,shecanlose someoneandstillfeellikeacompleteperson.

LifeisnotatrapsetforusbyGodsothathecancondemnusforfailing.Lifeisnotaspellingbee,wherenomatterhowmanywordsyou’vegottenright,you’redisqualifiedifyoumakeonemistake.Lifeismorelikeabaseballseason,whereeventhebestteamlosesonethirdofitsgamesandeventheworstteamhasitsdaysofbrilliance.Ourgoalistowinmoregamesthanwelose.Whenweacceptthatimperfectionispartofbeinghuman,andwhenwecan continuerollingthroughlifeandappreciateit,wewillhaveachievedawholenessthatotherscanonlyaspireto.That,Ibelieve,iswhatGodasksofus---not“Beperfect”,not“Don’tevenmakeamistake”,but“Bewhole”.

        Ifwearebraveenoughtolove,strongenoughtoforgive,generousenoughtorejoiceinanother’shappiness,andwiseenoughtoknow     thereisenoughlovetogoaroundforusall,thenwecanachievea  fulfillmentthatnootherlivingcreaturewilleverknow.

4.TheTwoRoads

  ItwasNewYear'sNight.Anagedmanwasstandingatawindow.Heraisedhismournfuleyestowardsthedeepbluesky,wherethestarswerefloatinglikewhiteliliesonthesurfaceofaclearcalmlake.Thenhecastthemontheearth,wherefewmorehopelesspeoplethanhimselfnowmovedtowardstheircertaingoal——thetomb.Hehadalreadypassedsixtyofthestagesleadingtoit,andhehadbroughtfromhisjourneynothingbuterrorsandremorse.Nowhishealthwaspoor,hismindvacant,hisheartsorrowful,andhisoldageshortofcomforts.

  Thedaysofhisyouthappearedlikedreamsbeforehim,andherecalledtheseriousmomentwhenhisfatherplacedhimattheentranceofthetworoads——oneleadingtoapeaceful,sunnyplace,coveredwithflowers,fruitsandresoundingwithsoft,sweetsongs;theotherleadingtoadeep,darkcave,whichwasendless,wherepoisonflowedinsteadofwaterandwheredevilsandpoisonoussnakeshissedandcrawled.

  Helookedtowardstheskyandcriedpainfully,"Ohyouth,return!

Ohmyfather,placemeoncemoreattheentrancetolife,andI'llchoosethebetterway!

"Butbothhisfatherandthedaysofhisyouthhadpassedaway.

  Hewasthelightsflowingawayinthedarkness.Thesewerethedaysofhiswastedlife;hesawastarfallfromtheskyanddisappeared,andthiswasthesymbolofhimself.Hisremorse,whichwaslikeasharparrow,struckdeeplyintohisheart.Thenherememberedhisfriendsinhischildhood,whoenteredonlifetogetherwithhim.ButtheyhadmadetheirwaytosuccessandwerenowhonouredandhappyonthisNewYear'snight.

  Theclockinthehighchurchtowerstruckandthesoundmadehimrememberhisparents'earlyloveforhim.TheyhadtaughthimandprayedtoGodforhisgood.Buthechosethewrongway.Withshameandgriefhedarednolongerlooktowardsthatheavenwherehisfatherlive.Hisdarkenedeyeswerefulloftears,andwithadespairingeffort,heburstoutacry:

"Comeback,myearlydays!

Comeback!

"

  Andhisyouthdidreturn,forallthiswasonlyadreamwhichhehadonNewYear'sNight.Hewasstillyoungthoughhisfaultswerereal;hehadnotyetenteredthedeep,darkcave,andhewasstillfreetowalkontheroadwhichleadstothepeacefulandsunnyland.

  Thosewhostilllingerontheentranceoflife,hesitatingtochoosethebrightroad,rememberthatwhenyearsarepassedandyourfeetstumbleonthedarkmou
