ChancellorKohl,GoverningMayorDiepgen,ladiesandgentlemen:

Twentyfouryearsago,PresidentJohnF.KennedyvisitedBerlin,andspeakingtothepeopleofthiscityandtheworldatthecityhall.Wellsincethentwootherpresidentshavecome,eachinhisturntoBerlin.Andtoday,I,myself,makemysecondvisittoyourcity.

WecometoBerlin,weAmericanPresidents,becauseit'sourdutytospeakinthisplaceoffreedom.ButImustconfess,we’redrawnherebyotherthingsaswell;bythefeelingofhistoryinthiscity--morethan500yearsolderthanourownnation;bythebeautyoftheGrunewaldandtheTiergarten;mostofall,byyourcourageanddetermination.Perhapsthecomposer,PaulLinke,understoodsomethingaboutAmericanPresidents.Yousee,likesomanyPresidentsbeforeme,IcomeheretodaybecausewhereverIgo,whateverIdo:
