Firsttheymeasuredfluidintelligenceofvolunteersusingstandardtests.Thentheytrainedeachinacomplicatedmemorytask—thechild’scardgame,inwhichtheyhadtorecallacardtheysawandheard.Duringthecourse,theyneededtoignoreirrelevantitems,monitorongoingperformance,managetwotasksatthesametimeandconnectrelateditemstooneanotherinspaceandtime.

Thefourgroupsexperiencedahalf-houroftrainingdailyfor8,12,17and19days,respectively.Tomakesuretheywerenotjustimprovingtheirtest-takingskills,theresearcherscomparedthemwithcontrolgroupsthattookthetestswithoutthetraining.

Theresults,publishedMondayinTheProceedingsoftheNationalAcademyofSciences,werestriking.Improvementinthetrainedgroupswasalotgreater.Moreover,thelongertheytrained,thehighertheirscoreswere.Allperformers,fromtheweakesttothestrongest,showedsignificantimprovement.
