Beforethe1500’s,thewesternplainsofNorthAmericaweredominatedbyfarmers.Onegroup,theMandans,livedintheupperMissouriRivercountry,primarilyinpresent-dayNorthDakota.Theyhadlargevillagesofhousesbuiltclosetogether.ThetightarrangementenabledtheMandanstoprotectthemselvesmoreeasilyfromtheattacksofotherswhomightseektoobtainsomeoffoodthesehighlycapablefarmersstoredfromoneyeartothenext.

Thewomenhadprimaryresponsibilityforthefields.Theyhadtoexerciseconsiderableskilltoproducethedesiredresults,fortheirnorthernlocationmeantfleetinggrowingseasons.Winteroftenlingered;autumncouldbeusheredinbyseverefrost.Forgoodmeasure,duringthespringandsummer,drought,heat,hail,grasshoppers,andotherfrustrationsmightawaitthewarygrower.
