Theresearchersbeganbyasking75healthymenandwomenhowoftentheydividedtheirattentionbetweendifferenttypesoftechnology.Thiscouldmeansendingatextmessagewhilelisteningtomusicandcheckingemails,orspeakingonthephonewhilewatchingTVandsurfingtheweb.Thevolunteerswerethengivenbrainscanswhichshowedtheyhadlessofgreymatter.Thestudy,publishedinthejournalPLOSONE,isthefirsttomakealinkbetweenmultitaskingandthestructureofthebrain.

ResearcherKepKeeLohsaid:

“Mediamultitaskingisbecomingmorecommoninourlivestodayandthereisincreasingconcernaboutitsinfluencesonourcognition(认知)andsocial-emotionalwell-being.”Headdedthatmoreresearchisneededtoprovethatmultitaskingshrinksthebrain.Thisisbecauseitisalsopossiblethatpeoplewithlessgreymatteraremoredrawntousinglotsofdevicesatthesametime.Scientistshavepreviouslyprovedbrainstructurecanbechangedonlongexposuretonewenvironmentsandexperience.Otherstudieshaveshownthattraining---suchaslearningtojuggleortaxidriverslearningthemapofLondon---canincreasegrey-matterdensities(密度)incertainparts.
