Fromtalkingrobotstodriverlessvehicles,technologyhasbecomesoadvancedthatthepreviouslyimpossibleseemstooccuronadailybasis.Andyet-westillhavenocureforthecommoncold.

Whycan'twestopthecommoncold?

AccordingtoPeterBarlow,ascientistatEdinburghNapierUniversity,themainchallengeliesinthemanydifferenttypesofcoldvirusesthatbelongtotherhinoviruses(鼻病毒).Thereareatleast160types.Theymutate(突变)soeasilythattheyquicklybecomeresistanttodrugs,orlearntohidefromourimmunesystems.Inotherwords,asinglecureisn'tlikelytoworkoneverytypeofcold.

However,researchersfromStanfordUniversityandtheUniversityofCalifornia,SanFrancisco,havefoundapossibleanswer.Theydiscoveredaprotein(蛋白质)thatthevirusesneed.Alltheviruseswereunabletoreplicate(复制)insidecellswithoutagenethatproducesaspecificproteincalledSETD3.

Toidentifythegenewhichproducesthespecificprotein,researchersusedagene-editingtechniquetotestallgenesinthehumangenome(基因组).Namely,theyrandomlydisabledasinglegeneineachofthecells,sothatthecellslackedoneoranotherofeverygeneinourgenome.Thesegeneticallymodifiedcellswerethenexposedtotherhinoviruses,whichcausethecommoncold.Theteamthenlookedatwhichgenewasmissingincellsthatcontinuedtogrow.Asitturnedout,theonethatstoodoutwasSETD3,whichmakesaproteinofthesamename.

Carettesaidtheplanistofindadrugwhichcantemporarilydisabletheprotein,insteadofproducinggeneticallymodifiedhumans.“Wehaveidentifiedafantastictargetthatallrhinovirusesrequireanddependon.Takethatawayandthevirusreallyhasnochance,”saidCarette.
