Minimalpairsandminimalsets
Whentwowordsareidenticalineverywayexceptforacontrastinonesoundsegmentoccurringinthesamepositioninthestring,thetwowordsarecalledaminimalpair最小对立体.

Aminimalpairshouldfollowthreeconditions:
1)theyaredifferentinmeaning;2)theydifferonlyinonesoundsegment;3)thedifferentsoundsoccurinthesamepositioninthestrings.

Whenagroupofwordsmeetalltheabovethreeconditions,theyarecalledaminimalset最小集合.E.g.:

Freevariation自由变异
Whentwoormoredifferentsoundsoccurinthesamepositionwithoutanychangeofmeaning,theyaresaidtobeinfreevariation.
