Bytheeighteenthcenturytheharsh,deterministic,doctrinairemethodsbegantoshowsomechange.Societyslowlyaccordedchildrenaroleofmoreimportance.Bookswerewrittenexpresslyforthemandgraduallylawswerepassedfortheirprotection.

One-roomschoolsarepartoftheUnitedStates,andthementionofthemmakespeoplefeelavaguelongingfor"thewaythingswere."One-roomschoolsareanendangeredspecies,however.Formorethanahundredyearsone-roomschoolshavebeensystematicallyshutdownandtheirstudentssentawaytocentralizedschools.Asrecentlyas1930therewere149,000one-roomschoolsintheUnitedStates.By1970therewere1,800.Today,ofthenearly800remainingone-roomschools,morethan350areinNebraska.Therestarescatteredthroughafewotherstatesthathaveontheirroadmapswide-spacesbetweentowns.
