Theresultshavescientiststhinkingthatlonelinessmighthurttheimmunesystem,whichprotectsthebodyfromdiseases.

Hopingtoprovethistheory,Jaremkaandherresearchteamputvolunteersthroughastresstest.Duringthetest,volunteerswereaskedtomakeanunpreparedspeechinfrontofagroupofstony-facedpeole.Theresearchersfoundthatvolunteerswhosaidtheywerelonelyintheirdailylivesfeltmorestressduringthetest.Andtheirbloodsamplesshowedthatallthestresshadmanagedtocauseharmfulchangestotheirimmunesystem.

“Lonelinesshasbeenthoughtofinmanywaysasachronicstressor(慢性增压器)—asociallypainfulsituationthatcanlastforquitealongtime,”explainedJaremka,wholedthestudy.
