IknowIcomplimentmysonfrequently,andcertainlytrytomakesureheknowsheisloved.ButIrealizethatIhaveneveractuallypointedout,onebyone,specificqualitiesthatmakehimuniqueandsospecialtome.Andhowinfrequentlywereallypointoutwhatisspecialinothers.Sure,wesay“Iloveyou”or“thanks”regularly,butwhendowetaketheopportunitytoreallyandtrulyexaminewhatmakesapersonspecial?
Whatisuniqueanddifferentaboutthem?
Thisyear,thetimewasscheduledformysontoreceivemorethan40complimentsfromhispeers,teachers,parents,andhimself.Eachchildhadtheirdayatthecenterofthecircle,theirfriendscominguponebyonetogiveagiftofpowerfulwords.Thisyear,mysonheardthathisthoughtfulnesswasappreciated,hisideasimportant,hisexpressionsinspiring.Hewasalsoexpectedtowriteanddeliveracomplimenttoeachofhisclassmates.

Whenwegotmarriedpeopleactuallyplacedbetsatoursmallweddinginmyfamily'sdiningroom.Theythoughtourrelationshipwouldnotlastayear.Hishamdidnottellhisparentshewasmarriedforalmostfiveyears.Hefeltthatifhefailedatschoolhisfamilywouldblamethemarriage.Ofcourseeverybody,fromArabstoAmericans,thoughthemarriedmetogetagreencard.Iknewhedidn't.
Ilivedinhiscountryforsixyearsaftergraduationandhadasonthere.ThroughHisham'seyesIsawthebeautyofhiscultureandreligionandthesimplewaysofhispeople.BeingfromNewYorkandlivinginAmman,Jordan,IstillhadmyChristmastreeeachyear,myEastereggsandevenaHalloweenpumpkininthewindow.Ialsotooksomeoftheirways—cooking,methodsofmothering,socializing—anditenhancedmyowncharacterinthelongrun.
Throughouttheyears,IwasnottheItaliangirlfromNewYork,nottheAmericanmarriedtotheArab;Iwasabeautifulblendedpersonwithtwochildrenandamanwholovesme.
