Afirmhandshakecouldbeasignofalongerlifeexpectancy(预期寿命),accordingtoBritishresearchers.ScientistsattheMedicalResearchCouncilfoundthatelderlypeoplewhocouldstillgiveafirmhandshakeandwalkataquickpacewerelikelytooutlivetheirslowerpeers.

Theyfoundsimplemeasuresofphysicalcapabilitylikeshakinghands,walking,gettingupfromachairandbalancingononelegwererelatedtothelifeexpectancy,evenafteraccountingforage,sexandbodysize.Thestudyisthefirsttoprovideacomprehensive(综合的)viewoftheexistingdatafrom33studies.“Thesemeasureshavebeenusedinpopulation-basedresearchforquitealongtime,”saidRachelCooperoftheMedicalResearchCouncil’sUnitforLifelongHealthandAging.“Theymaybeusefulindicatorsforsubsequenthealth.”

Cooper,whosestudyappearsintheBritishMedicalJournal,saidmorestudiesareneededtoclarifywhetherthemeasureswouldbehelpfultodoctorsasascreeningtool.“Iwouldn’tsuggestthatwerollthemoutintoclinicalpracticetomorrow,butitispossiblethattheycouldbeusedinthefuture,”shetoldthemedia.

Theresearchersexamined33studiesinvolvingtensofthousandsofpeople,mostofwhomwereagedover60butlivinginthecommunityratherthaninhospitalorcarehomes.Theresearchersfoundthatthosewiththestrongesthandgraspstendedtolivelongerthanthosewithweakgrips.Thedeathrateovertheperiodofthestudiesforpeoplewithweakhandshakeswas67percenthigherthanforpeoplewithafirmgrip.

Theslowestwalkerswerenearlythreetimesmorelikelytodieduringthestudyperiodthanswifterwalkers.Thepeoplewhowereslowesttogetupfromachairhadaboutdoublethedeathratecomparedtothequickrisers.
