SMDdevicesare,bytheirverynature,toosmalltocarryconventionalsemiconductortypenumbers.Instead,asomewhatarbitrarycodingsystemhasgrownup,wherethedevicepackagecarriesasimpletwo-orthree-characterIDcode.
Identifyingthemanufacturers'typenumberofanSMDdevicefromthepackagecodecanbeadifficulttask,involvingcombingthroughmanydifferentdatabooks.
ThisHTMLbookisdesignedtoprovideaneasymeansofdeviceidentification.Itlistswellover3,400devicecodesinalphabeticalorder,togetherwithtypenumbers,devicecharacteristicsorequivalentsandpinoutinformation.
HowtousetheSMDCodebook
ToidentifyaparticularSMDdevice,firstidentifythepackagestyleandnotetheIDcodeprintedonthedevice.Nowlookupthecodeinthealphanumericlistingwhichformsthemainpartofthisbookbyclickingonthefirstcharactershownintheleft-menu.
Unfortunately,eachdevicecodeisnotnecessarilyunique.Forexampleadevicecoded1AmightbeeitheraBC846AoraFMMT3904.Eventhesamemanufacturermayusethesamecodefordifferentdevices!
Ifthereismorethanoneentry,usethepackagestyletodifferentiatebetweendeviceswiththesameIDcode.
ThiscompilationhasbeencollectedfromRPBlackwellG4PMK,manufacturers'dataandothersourcesofSMDdeviceIDcodes,pinoutandleadeddeviceequivalentinformation.
TheentriesundertheManufacturercolumnarenotintendedtobecomprehensive;rathertheyareintendedtoprovidehelponlocatingsourcesofmoredetailedinformationifyourequireit.
IDCodeVariations
Manymanufacturersuseanextraletterastheirownidentificationcode.IfthedeviceisfromPhilipsitwillsometimeshavealowercase'p'（orsometimes't'）addedtothecode;Siemensdevicesusuallyhavealowercase's'.

Thishasbeenaprobleminthepast,howeverrecentlymanufacturershavebeenaddinglowercaseletterswhichclarifythecode.
ManyrecentMotoroladeviceshaveasmallsuperscriptletterafterthedevicecode,suchasSAC.（Thissmallerletterismerelyamonthofmanufacturecode.）
ManydevicesfromRohmSemiconductorswhichstartwithGhavedirectequivalentsfoundintherestofthenumber.ForexampleGD1isthesameasD1whichisaBCW31.
Somedeviceshaveasinglecolouredletter（usuallyonextremelysmalldiodepackages）.Colour,ifsignificant,isshowninsmalltypeafterthecodeletter.
An'L'suffixusuallyindicatesalow-profilepackage,suchasanSOT323orSC70.

Reversejoggledevicesdopresentafewproblems.Theyofternhavean'R'inthetypenumber.Areversepackageisonewheretheleadhavebeenbentupinsteadofdown.Soit'samirrorimageofaconventionaldevice.Identificationisusuallypossiblefromthecodenumber,butsomemanufacturersusethesamecode.Inthesecases,it'sacaseoflookingatthedevicewithamagnifyingglass.Theleadsofmostnormalpackagescomeoutclosertothecircuitboardsideofthedevice;converselyareversejogglepackagewillhavethemcomingoutclosertothe'top'ofthedevice.
Sometimesaseriesofdevices,derivedfromthesamedie,haverelatedtype（notcode）numbers.Oftenan'R'willindicateareversejogglepackage,and/ora'W'indicateasmallerpackagevariant,suchasSOT343.
Sometimessimilaritiesarealsofoundinthecodenumbers.Forexample:
Recentlysomemanufacturershaveusedasymbolorlowercaselettertoindicatethecountryofmanufacture.Thesehavebeenignoredinthealphabeticalordering.Forexample:

Leadedequivalentdeviceandinformation
Wherepossible,thelistinggivesthepartnumberofaconventionalwire-leadeddevicewithequivalentcharacteristics.Iftheleadeddeviceiswell-knownthennomoreinformationisgiven.Ifthedeviceislesscommon,someadditionalinformationwillsometimesbegiven.Wherenoexactleadedequivalentexists,abriefdevicedescriptionisgiven,whichmaybesufficienttoallowsubstitutionwithanotherdevice.
Whendescribingdevicecharacteristics,sometermsareimpliedfromthetypeofdevice.Forexample,avoltagespecifiedforarectifierdiodeisusuallythemaximumPIV（peakinversevoltage）ofthediode,butforazenerdiodetheoperating（zenervoltage）willbegiven.
