C.OneofthepeoplewhothinksthatitdoesnotisGeorgeLoewenstein,aneconomistatCarnegieMellonUniversity,inPittsburgh.Inparticular,hesuspectsthatmodernshoppinghassubvertedthedecision-makingmachineryinawaythatencouragespeopletorunupdebt.Toprovethepointhehasteamedupwithtwopsychologists,BrianKnutsonofStanfordUniversityandDrazenPrelecoftheMassachusettsInstituteofTechnology,tolookatwhathappensinthebrainwhenitisdecidingwhattobuy.

H.People’sshoppingbehaviourthereforeseemstohavepiggy-backedonoldneuralcircuitsevolvedforanticipationofrewardandtheavoidanceofhazards.WhatDrLoewensteinfoundinterestingwastheseparationoftheassessmentoftheproduct(whichseemstobeassociatedwiththenucleusaccumbens)fromtheassessmentofitsprice(associatedwiththeinsularcortex),eventhoughthetwoarethensynthesisedintheprefrontalcortex.Hishypothesisisthatratherthanweighingthepresentgoodagainstfuturealternatives,asorthodoxeconomicssuggestshappens,peopleactuallybalancetheimmediatepleasureoftheprospectivepossessionofaproductwiththeimmediatepainofpayingforit. I.Thatmakesperfectsenseasanevolvedmechanismfortrading.Ifoneusefulobjectisbeingtradedforanother(hardcashinmoderntime),thefutureutilityofwhatisbeinggivenupisembeddedintheobjectbeingtraded.Emotionisascapableofassigningsuchavalueasreason.Buyingoncredit,though,maybedifferent.Theabstractnatureofcreditcards,coupledwiththedefermentofpaymentthattheypromise,maymodulatethe“con”sideofthecalculationinfavourofthe“pro”.
