wellinanursinghomeasinasmallresidentialcarehome,otherfactorsbeingequal.Itisan

interactionbetweenthepersonandtheplace,notthesortofplaceinitself,thatleadstobetter

orworseexperiences.“Youcan’tjustsay,‘Let’sputthispersoninaresidentialcarehome

insteadofanursinghome—shewillbemuchbetteroff,’”Dr.Robisonsaid.Whatmatters,

sheadded,“isacombinationofwhatpeoplebringinwiththem,andwhattheyfindthere.”

ofassistedliving,forinstance,UniversityofNorthCarolinaresearchersfoundthatahostof

variables—thefacility’stype,sizeorage;whetherachainownedit;howattractivethe

neighborhoodwas—hadnosignificantrelationshiptohowtheresidentsfaredintermsof

illness,mentaldecline,hospitalizationsormortality.Whatmatteredmostwastheresidents’

physicalhealthandmentalstatus.Whatpeoplewerelikewhentheycameinhadgreater

consequencethanwhathappenedoncetheywerethere.

[J]AsIwasconsideringallthis,apressreleasefromarespectedresearchfirmcrossedmydesk,

announcingthatthefive-starratingsystemthatMedicaredevelopedin2008tohelpfamilies

comparenursinghomequalityalsohaslittlerelationshiptohowsatisfieditsresidentsortheir

familymembersare.Asamatteroffact,consumersexpressedhighersatisfactionwiththe

one-starfacilities,thelowestrated,thanwiththefive-starones.(Moreonthisstudyandthe

starratingswillappearinasubsequentpost.)

[K]Beforewecollectivelytearourhairout—howarewesupposedtofindourwayinalandscape

thisconfusing?

homenearmytown.Ihaveseenthisplace—itiselegant,insideandout.Butnobodygreeted

thedaughterandmotherwhentheyarrived,thoughthevisithadbeenplanned;nobody

introducedthemtotheotherresidents.Whentheyhadlunchinthediningroom,theysat

aloneatatable.

[N]Thedaughterfearedhermotherwouldbeignoredthere,andsoshedecidedtomoveherintoa

morewelcomingfacility.Basedonwhatisemergingfromsomeofthisresearch,thatmight

havebeenasrationalawayasanytoreachadecision.
