In2012,KevinattendedacoursecalledReadySetGointhatcentre.ThecoursewasfordisadvantagedkidsinKingswood—alow-incomeareainSydney’swesternsuburbs—anditsgoalwastoteachthekidshowtocreatebusinessesandoffervaluetotheneighborhood.

Attheendofthecourse,Sarahtookthekidstothelocalarea.Sheaskedvolunteerstosharetheirbusinessexperiences—Kevinimmediatelyputuphishand.Hischallengewastotradehishot-dogsellingserviceforfreebreadatabakery.Althoughscared,Kevinwasabletosharehisentrepreneur(创业)storywiththeshopownerandaskedifhecouldexchangehisserviceforsomebread.Unexpectedly,theshopownertoldKevinhowmovedhewasbyhisstoryandhandedhimsomebreadforfree.Bytheendoftheafternoon,hisbeliefinhimselfandwhatwaspossiblewasatanall-timehigh.

Thefollowingweek,Kevinsold70hot-dogsintwohoursandmadeover$200.Soonafter,hedeliveredpublicspeechesin20schools,andwasselectedaspartofhisschool’sleadershipteam.Nowheheadsabusinessgroupworkingonhowtoincreasepotentialcustomerbase.

“Lonelinessaddsbeautytolife.Itputsaspecialburnonsunsetsandmakesnightairsmellbetter.”Indeed,intheeyesofartists,lonelinessneverseemstogooutofstyle.Therearepaintingsthatportrayloneliness,songsthatareinspiredbyloneliness,andmanyworksofliteraturethatcenteraroundthistheme.

IntheeyesofUKeconomistRachelReeves,however,lonelinessisfarfromromantic.Instead,it’sa“giantevil”that’sbecomeaseriousprobleminthecountry.

Sojusthowseriousisit?

OnJan17,UKPrimeMinisterTheresaMayappointedpoliticianTraceyCrouchasthecountry’sveryfirst“MinisterforLoneliness”.Herjobistoaddressthelonelinessthatthecountry’sbeenfeeling—aproblemwhich,accordingtoUKgovernmentresearch,isaffectingmorethan9millionpeopleinthecountry,andismoreharmfultoone’sphysicalandmentalhealththansmoking15cigarettesaday.

Andtheproblemhasn’tjustappearedrecently.Backin2014,theUKwasgiventhetitleofthe“lonelinesscapitalofEurope”byTheTelegraph.AsurveycarriedoutbythenewspaperfoundthatBritishpeoplewerelesslikelytogettoknowtheirneighborsorbuildstrongrelationshipswithpeoplethanthosefromotherEuropeancountries.

“ThereissomethingBritishaboutwantingtodealwithproblemsyourself,”ChristianGuy,directoroftheCentreforSocialJusticethink-tank(智囊团),toldTheTelegraph.

Butthisdoesn’tmeanthattheproblemonlyaffectsBritons.Infact,we’reallsufferingfromlonelinessnowmorethanever,inspiteofmostoftheworldnowhavingaccesstotheinternet,whichhasenabledustobemoreconnectedthanever.

Whatweneed,accordingtoKimLeadbetter,sisterofthelateUKpoliticianJoCox,istohave“properhumanconnections”.

“Ourlivesnowadaysaresobusy.Wespendthevastmajorityofourtimeonourphones,onourlaptops.Weneedtopresspauseonthatandactuallysitdownandspeaktohumanbeings,”Leadbettersaidataneventlastyear.

Butthefirststepstowardfightingthisproblemaretoacceptitsexistenceandnotbeashamedorintimidatedbyit.Afterall,withoutloneliness,manybeautifulpaintings,songs,andliteraryworkswouldn’tevenexist.And“evil”ornot,beinglonelyissimplypartoftheexperienceofbeinghuman.

Thissystemassumesthatacarhasaclearpathdowntheroad,butitcanbepairedwithotherexistingcomputingtechnologytodiscoverin-roadobstacles,saysOrt.Theresearchersalsoplantobuildaversionofthissystemwhichcanspotmarkingspaintedonstreets,
