Abstract
Inthispaper,IwillintroduceKhaledHosseini’snovelAThousandSplendidSunsandanalyzetheawakeningfeminismrevealedfromthisbook.Afghanwomenwereinanabsolutelylowsocialplacesthroughoutalonghistoricalperiod.Manywomenstruggledtosurviveinthatwar-torncountryandfoughtfortheirrightsandstatus.HosseiniwrotethestoryintheperspectiveoffemaleandtooktheAfghanistanwarsasbackground,describinghowNanagaveintotheoldfamilysystemandhowMariamandLailawereledtorevolt,struggledtosurviveinthewarsandpursuedtheirfreedomandtrueloveinthathardtime.Thisthesiswillanalyzethechangesoffemalestatus,theprogressoffeminineconsciousnessandtheriseofthefeminismaccordingtothecomparisonofthreemainfemalecharactersandconcludethatAfghanwomenwillcertainlycometotheequivalentstatuswithmenthroughtheirowneffortsandmakegreatcontributiontotherebuildingofAfghanistan.Inaddition,feminismisstillintheprocessofdevelopmentandAThousandSplendidSunshasanimportantimpactonthisprocess.

1.Introduction
KhaledHosseini,anAmericanauthorofAfghanorigin,isoneofthemostwelcomewritersofthetime.Heisnotaproductivewriterbutawriterwithhigh-qualityworks.HisfirstbookTheKiteRunner“spentmorethantwoyearsonbest-sellerlistsintheUnitedStates”(Lisa,2007).ThenhissecondbookAThousandSplendidSunswaspublishedin2007,whichhadgainedextensiveattentionbeforeitcameout.Becauseoftheconsistentpraisefromthecritics,Hosseinibecameawidelyacceptedmaturewriterfromafirst-timewriter.Thisbookiswrittenintheperspectiveoffemale,focusingonthewomenwhostruggledtosurviveunderthebackgroundofAfghanistanwars.Hosseinicontinuedhisexquisitewritingstyletonarrateatouchingstory,representingwhatAfghanwomenhadsufferedoverthefivedecades.Itisalsooneofthefewworksinwhichmaleauthorsportrayfeminism.ThisthesisiswrittentoinvestigatehowthemaleauthorHosseinidescribedfemalecharactersandpresentedfeminineconsciousness.OnthebasisoftheresearchonAThousandSplendidSuns,includingrelatedarticlesaboutthebackgroundoftheauthor,thebackgroundofthestory,thebookcontentandseveralrepresentativecharacters,thispaperwilldiscussthefeminismreflectedinHosseini’sworks.ItfirstlygivessomeintroductionstoKhaledHosseini,hisbookAThousandSplendidSunsandthedefinitionoffeminism.Thenitwillmakesomedescriptionsoffemalecharactersinthebook,rangingfromtheirfamilybackground,personality,destinyandtheirrelationships.Inadditiontotheabovepart,thispaperwillanalyzethefeminisminthebookmainlyaccordingtothecomparisonofthreefemalecharacters.Intheend,thispaperwillsummarizethesignificanceofthisbookinarousingpeopletoconcernAfghanwomenandpromotingfeminism.Therefore,AThousandSplendidSunsshouldbevaluedasanimportantworkofliteratureinthedevelopmentoffeminism.

KhaledHosseini,borninKabul,Afghanistanin1965,latermovedtotheUnitedStatesin1980,usedtoworkasaphysicianbeforethesuccessofhisfirstbook,TheKiteRunner,whichwasaninternationalbestseller,sellingmorethan12millioncopiesworldwide.Afterthat,hebecameafull-timewriter.Inaddition,hehimselfwasawardedtheUNFoundationPrizeforhumanitarianin2006andwasinvitedtoactasaGoodwillAmbassadorfortheUnitedNationsHighCommissionerforRefugees(UNHCR)duetothepowerfulinfluenceofthenovel.Andhissecondwork,AThousandSplendidSuns,waspublishedinMay,2007.Again,thisbookbecameoneofthenationalbest-sellersin2008.It“spent21weeksonTheNewYorkTimesBestSellerlistforpaperbackfiction”and“49weeksonTheNewYorkTimesBestSellerlistforhardcoverfiction”.("HardcoverFiction",2008)WhileTheKiteRunnerfocusesontherelationshipsamongmen,AThousandSplendidSunsisabouttwowomen,agenerationapart,beingchallengedbywar-tornKabuloverfiftyyears.Histhreebooks,includingthenewoneAndTheMountainsEchoedreleasedin2013,areallsetinAfghanistan,tellingstoriesthroughthegrowingprocessofAfghanboysandgirls.LosAngelesTimesremarkedthat“KhaledHosseinihasthestorytellinggift.Heoffersusthesweepofhistoricupheavalsnarratedtheintimacyoffamilyandvillagelife”.NowhehasfoundedanonprofitorganizationthatoffersAfghanistanpeoplehumanitarianassistance.

AThousandSplendidSunswasreleasedonMay22,2007.ItisHosseini’ssecondnovel,whichiscreatedintheperspectiveoffemale.Thetitleofthisbookcomesfromthepoetry“Onecouldnotcountthemoonsthatshimmeronherroofs;Orthethousandsplendidsunsthathidebehindherwalls”,whichwaswrittenby17th-centurypoetSaib-e-TabrizitopraisethebeautifulKabul.ThebookfocusesontwoAfghanwomen’stumultuouslivesandrelationships,presentingastoryspanningoverfiftyyears.Inadditiontothesetwowomen,atthebeginningofthebook,italsotalksaboutafemalecharacter,Nana,whoisamaidofJalil.ShehadatragicalfateandtookherownlifejustbecauseMariamlefthertofindJalil.MariamistheillegitimatechildofNanaandJalil.Shehadatortuouslife.Shewasabandonedbyherfatherandforcedtomarryashoemaker,Rasheed,atherageoffifteen.ThenshebegantosuffermaltreatofRasheedaftershefailedtogivehimaheir.Laila,bornabouttwentyyearslater,hadahappychildhoodandreceivedagoodeducation.SheandTariq,oneofherneighbors,wasindeeplovebutwerepulledapartowingtothewars.ShewasalsoforcedtochoosetoacceptthemarriageproposalfromRasheedbecauseshehadhadababywhenTariqwasbelievedtobedead.TherelationshipbetweenMariamandLailawaschangingandchangingsinceLailawentintoMariam’slife.Fromhostilitytoprofoundfriendship,theyperformedamovingstoryaboutstrugglingforrights,fightingagainsttheoldfamilysystemandpursuingdreamsandtruelove.Hosseini’sdistinguishednarrativeskillsandkeensensitivitiesofpersonalandnationaltragedymakethestorymovingandimpressive.Inthisstorywhichfeaturesthefemalesex,Hosseinishowspeopletheshininggloryofhumannatureandfeminism,whichisjustlikethesplendidsuns.

Feminismis“thetheoryofthepolitical,economic,andsocialequalityofthesexes”(Bloom,2009).ReferringtoOXFORDAdvancedLearners’sEnglish-ChineseDictionary,feminismis“thebeliefandaimthatwomenshouldhavethesamerights,powerandopportunitiesasmen”.Throughoutthelonghistoricalperiod,womenarealwaysinthelowerstatusinmanyaspectsinvarioussocialsystems,includingpolitics,economies,cultures,conceptsandsoon.Eveninsuchprivatefamilyterritories,womenarealwaysunequaltomen.Therefore,feminismandfeministmovementscameintobeingwithmanypeople’sfeminineconsciousnessawakening.Withthedevelopmentoffeminism,manywritersbegantowritestories,essaysandsomeotherarticlestoshowit.ButHosseiniisoneofthefewmaleauthorswhowritestoriesfromfemalepoints.HisAThousandSplendidSunswillbeanoutstandingrepresentativeworkthatshowsfeminismintheprocessoffeminism’sdevelopment.
