Abstract:

 Arthur Miller,an outstanding dramatist of20century,is known as“Americandrama conscience”.In1949his play Death of Salesman,won him an international reputation.Death of Salesman addresses the painful conflict within one family,tackles larger issuesregarding American national value,and examines the cost of blind faith in the AmericanDream.Miller charges American with selling a false myth constructed around a capitalistmaterialism nurtured by the postwar economy,a materialism that obscured the personal truthand moral vision of the original American Dream described by the country’s founders.Through analyzing the disillusionment of American Dream in the Death of Salesman,the paper aims at the further knowledge of American Dream.We can know the socialinfluence of American Dream,especially how it impacts the life and values of the public.Key Words:

【摘要】阿瑟·米勒是20世纪杰出的戏剧家，被誉为“美国戏剧的良心”。

一九四九年他的戏剧《推销员之死》为其赢得国际声誉。

《推销员之死》展示了一个家庭的成员之间令人心痛的矛盾冲突，审视了美国国民的价值观,剖析了人们因为盲目信奉美国梦所付出的代价。

在剧中，米勒控诉了美国社会兜售的虚幻神话。

这个神话是围绕战后资本主义所滋养的资产阶级物质主义构建起来的，物质主义遮盖了人生真相，模糊了这个国家的建造者们最初描述的美国梦所倡导的道德观念。

通过解析《推销员之死》中美国梦的破灭，本文旨在让我们进一步地了解美国梦，以及美国梦对当时社会的影响，尤其是对普通大众生活方方面面的影响以及价值观的改变。

I.Introduction

1.1The American Dream

As a significant cultural subject,the American dream deeply roots in American history,appearing as an important theme in American literature as well as the central ideology inordinary Americans’ minds.Generations of Americans have been in quest of their ownAmerican dream in different forms.

The American dream is a candid expression of American’s optimistic attitude towardslife,an affirmation on man’s capacity of realizing the unlimited possibilities of existence.It isJames Truslow Adams,who gives the name“American Dream”to the phenomenon that heregards as this country’s greatest achievement:

 a democratic standard for the world in1931inhis The Epic of American.He uses it to embody the idea that with enough hard work and luck,anybody can achieve life he wants.He states:

The American Dream is that dream of a land in which life should be better and richer andfuller for everyone,with opportunity for each according to ability or achievement.It is a difficultdream for the European upper classes to interpret adequately,and too many of us ourselves havegrown weary and mistrustful of it.It is not a dream of motor cars and high wages merely,but adream of social order in which each man and each woman shall be able to attain to the fulleststature of which they are innately capable,and be recognized by others for what they are,regardless of the fortuitous circumstances of birth or position.（James Truslow Adams,1931:

92）.The origin of the American Dream stemmed from the government and economic fromthe models of the old Europe.In18century,the England immigrants who traveled by a shipnamed mayflower looked for a place that the pilgrims can live as the“pure land”.AmericanDream had begun to sprout quietly.The United States gave the world every chance of percapita.As long as they worked hard,they can achieve their dreams.Those immigrants whocame to the United States was underdog of Europe.And the most typical was the Puritan ofEngland and bankruptcy small farmers of Germany.They had a strong request of political.

equality and democracy when they came to the uncultured United States.Thus the equalrights became a connotation of American dream.Immigrants in this new world provided ahope for egalitarianism.Martian Luther King invoked the American Dream in his famousspeech:

“Let us not wallow in the valley of despair,I say to you today,my friends.And soeven though we face the difficulties of today and tomorrow,I still have a dream.It is a dreamdeeply rooted in the American Dream”（King,1968:

10）.While in the20century,the essenceof American Dream had changed.The rapid development of the capitalist economy coveredup the essence of the American Dream.American Dream had been hijacked by materialism.The pursuit of material wealth became the whole of the American dream.What Miller wrotein his Death of Salesman is this twisted American Dream.

Through analyzing the disillusionment of American Dream in the Death of Salesman,the paper aims at the further knowledge of American Dream.Further more we can know thesocial influence of American Dream,especially how it impacts the life and values of thepublic.

1.2Literature review

Death of Salesman,Arthur Miller’s famous work,indicted the fundamental Americanvalues and the American Dream of material success.Since the first appearance of the play,ithad been receiving all kinds of comments and some controversy that has nothing to do withits artistic merit.The attrack on Death of Saleman characterized the anticommunistmovement known as McCarthyism,but the vast majority of comments were praises.InContemporary American Drama:

 a study in the plays of Tennessee Williams,Arthur Millerand Edward Albee,Singh Abha argued that Death of a Salesman is a complex andpsychological play,dealing with guilt…Like the great tragic figures of Sophocles andShakespeare,Miller’s Willy is both an individual and a type（Abha,1998:

70-71）.Some critics commented on it from the perspective of philosophy.For example,Matthew C.Roudane,in Death of a Salesman and the Poetics of Arthur Miller,said that T he.

241）.William Hawkins,in his Death of a Salesman Powerful Tragedy held that Death of a Salesmanis a play written along the lines of the finest classical tragedy.It is the revelation of a man’s downfall,indestruction whose roots are entirely in his own soul.

And Chinese authors were interested in Willy ’s tragedy.Han Huiyan in hers papers analysisthe reason of Willy’s failure.Quan Rong aims at the tragedy of Willy and the whole American.Others are paid their attention to the sense of consumption Death of a Salesman,such asXiaoXuenong.
