选择越多,人们越幸福,这看似合乎逻辑,而实际情况却相反。

一些受人尊重的社会学家,如心理学大家大卫G.迈尔斯以及政治学家罗伯特E.莱恩告诫我们说,伴随着选择的增多和财富的增加,人们的幸福感反而会下降。

一代人的时间,美国人的“康乐感”一直在持续缓慢下降。

过去30年是一段非常繁荣的时期,但认为自己“非常幸福”的人的数量却下降了,下降比例大约为5%,这比例看似不大,但却相当于1,400万美国人。

除此之外,作为一个社会群体,如今临床确诊患有忧郁症的美国人人数是有史以来最多的。

据估计(如心理学家马丁*塞利格曼在其《活出最乐观的自己》一书中所说),到2000年的忧郁症患者数量可能为1900年的10倍左右。
