TheyfoundthesystemonShodan,asearchenginethatlistsdevicesconnectedtotheInternet,andthenranitthroughtheirownsoftwaretoidentifywhoownedthebuilding.InthecaseoftheGooglehacking,theresearchershadnoimmoralpurposeandjustinformedGoogleaboutwhattheyfound.

AccordingtoMr.Rios,WhorunssecuritycompanyWhitescope,thereare50,000buildingscurrentlyconnectedtotheInternet,includingresearchinstitutes,churchesandhospitals,and2,000ofthoseareonlinewithnopasswordprotection.MartynThomas,aprofessorofITatGreshamCollegeintheUK,says,“Itisbeyonddoubtthatattemptstoattackbuildingmanagementsystemsarchappeningallthetime.”

Makingabuildingsmartgenerallymeansconnectingthesystemsthatcontrolheating,HatingandsecuritytotheInternetandthewidercorporatenetwork.Therewasastrongreasonfordoingthis,saidAndrewKelly,principalsecurityconsultantatdefencecompanyQinetiq.

“Energysavingsarethebiggestfactorinconnectingbuildingmanagementsystemstothecorporatenetwork,”hesays.“Itgivesthosewhorunthebuildingbettercontrolandoffersbetween20%to50%inenergysavings,”headds.
