Untilthe1960sFinland’sschoolsystemhadbeeninfluencedlargelybyitsneighbor,theSovietUnion.Moststudentsleftschoolaftersixyears;somewentontoprivateschools.Onlythewealthyonesgotabettereducation.Inthemiddleofthe1960stheFinnishgovernmentsawtheneedtochangeandmodernizetheireducationsystemiftheywantedtobeinternationallycompetitive.Lawmakersmadeasimpledecision:

abasicschoolforallthe7-to16-year-olds.Compulsoryeducationbeginsat7.Thegovernmentmakesitpossibleforallchildrentoattendpreschoolaswell.

MostofFinland’sschoolsgettheirmoneyfromthegovernment.Thepeoplewhoareinchargeoftheeducationsystem,fromteacherstoofficialsaretrainedteachers,notpoliticianslikeinothercountries.

Teachersworkwiththeirpupilsinschoolasmuchaspossible.Whenteachersarenotwiththepupils,theyspendalotoftimeinschoolsworkingonthecurriculumandnewprojects.SchoolsinFinlandaresmall,atleastforinternationalstandards.Soteachersknoweverypupilintheirschoolandtryeverythingtosucceedwiththeirpupils.Thatiswhydropoutratesarelowcomparedtoothercountries.Incontrasttoothernations,teachersinFinlandarehighlyrespected.Finlandselectsitsteachersverycarefully:

onlytalentedstudentsgoontoauniversityandreceiveamaster’sdegreeineducation.Finlandonlytakesthebesttoeducateitsyouth.
