[3]Acoupleofhourslater,medicalhelparrived.ThemedicalhelpwasayoungAmericanNavydoctorandanequallyyoungNavynurse.Theyquicklyfoundoneyounggirltobeverybadlyinjured,anditwasclearthatwithoutimmediateaction,shewoulddiefromlossofbloodandshock.

[4]Theysawthatshehadtohaveblood,buttheirlimitedsuppliesdidnotincludeplasma,soamatchingbloodtypewasrequired.AquickbloodtypingshowedthatneitherAmericanhadthecorrectbloodtype.Severaloftheuninjuredorphansdid.

[5]ThedoctorspokealittleVietnamese,andthenursespokealittlehigh-schoolFrench.ThechildrenspokenoEnglishbutsomeFrench.Usingwhatlittlecommonlanguagetheycouldfind,togetherwithalotofsignlanguage,theytriedtoexplaintothesefrightenedchildrenthatunlesstheycouldgivesomebloodtotheirlittlefriendshewouldcertainlydie.Thentheyaskedifanyonewouldbewillingtogivebloodtohelp.

[1]ItseemstomethatneighborsaregoingoutofstyleinAmerica.Thefriendnextdoorfromwhomyouborrowedfoureggsoraladderhasmoved,andthepeopleintherenowarestrangers.

[2]Someoftheoldideasaboutneighborsareprobablysilly,anditmaybejustaswellthatourrelationswithourneighborsarechanging.Thereligiousteachingto"LoveThyNeighbor"wasprobablyapoortranslationofwhatmusthaveoriginallybeen"RespectThyNeighbor".Lovedoesn'texistjustbecausewewantitto.

[3]FewerthanhalfthepeopleintheUnitedStatesliveinthesamehousetheylivedinfiveyearsago,sothere'snoreasontolovethepeoplewholivenextdoortoyoujustbecausetheyhappenedtobuyahousenextdoortoyours.Theonlythingneighborshaveincommontobeginwithisbeingclose,andunlesssomethingmoredevelops,thatisn’treasonenoughtobebestfriends.It

[1]Havinggoodoldfriendsisagoodthing,butmakingnewonescanbeevenbetter.Nomatterwhatageweare,allofusappreciatethesupportandhelpwhichfriendsgiveus.Thehelpmaybeforonlyasmallthing,oritmaybeforsomethingthatcouldsaveourlife.Thesizeofthehelporsupportisnotreallythemostimportantthing,butthefactofhavingfriendsisveryimportant.

[2]I'vejustmadeanewfriend,Joan.She'snotjustanotherpersonIcantalkwithorwavetoaswepassoneanotheronthestreet,butagoodfriend.Sheissomeonewhowillgooutwithmeforlunch,ordropbymyhomeforacupoftea.SheissomeonewhowilllistenandmakemefeelunderstoodthenexttimeImayfeelsadorworriedfornoapparentreason.

[3]Thisisnosmallmatterforme.Ibarelyhaveenoughtimeorenergytokeepupwithmyoldfriends,letalonemakenewones.But,asIgrowolder--andIamnow35yearsold--itisimportanttometohaveasafetynetoffriends.Holeskeepopeningupinthenetasoldfriendsmoveaway.I'vegottospendtheenergynowtoincludenewfriends.

[4]Makingfriendsisalotlikedatingafteraterriblebreakup.Youhesitateanddragyourfeetbecauseyoucan'tbelieveyouhavetostartoveragain.Butwhenyoudo,it'snothalfashardasyouthoughtitwouldbe,andit'stwiceasrewardingasyoumighthavehoped.

[5]Forexample,Ialmostdidn'tmeetJoanwhoisnowoneofmybestfriends.Wewereatthecityswimmingpool,waitingforour5-year-oldsonstofinishtheirswimminglessons.JoanwasreadingabookthatIhadreadformybookclub,andIwantedtosaysomething,butdidn't.ItwasalmostasifI'dlosttheabilitytosayhello.

[6]Inthelockerroomweweretogetheragainasoursonsgotdressedandreadytogohome.Isaid,mostlytoherback,"WhatdoyouthinkofAmyTan'swriting?

"Sheturnedaround,andlikeateenager,Iblushed."Oh,"shesaid,"I'mreallyenjoyingTheBonesetter'sDaughter.IreadJoyLuckClub,andshe'sbeenmyfavoritewritersincethen."

[7]Wetalkedafterthenexttwolessons,comparedourreadinglists,andchasedoursonsoutofthedressingroomagain.Bythefifthswimminglesson,wearrangedtospendadaytogethershoppinginthecity.That'sprettywild,don'tyouthinkforapersonofmyage?

[8]Ididn'talwayschoosemyfriends.Foryears,Iletfatechoosethemforme.Anewjob,anewcity,anexpensiveapartmentmademebefriendswithpeopleI'dneverhavesaidhellotootherwise.But,asIgrewolderIgrewimpatientwithsomeofmyfriends,andIdecidedthataccidentalrelationshipsdon'talwayssurvivechangesinlife.Thosetypesoffriendsdon'toften

helpyouduringlife'sdifficulttimeswhenyoureallyneedhelp.
