Thatmorning,findingtheywouldhavetowaitwhiletheircarriagewasbeingrepaired,theyhaddriveninalocalconveyanceuptothecityonthemountain,wheretheyhadbeentoldtheywouldfindbetterquarters;andtheretheyhadstayedtwoorthreedays.
TheCafeofthesimpleinnwheretheystayedwasthemeetingplaceofthenotabilitiesofthelittlecity;andamongthemtheynoticedabeautiful,slim,talkativeoldman,withbrightblackeyesandsnow-whitehair—tallandstraightandstillwiththefigureofayouth,althoughthewaitertoldthemwithpridethattheContewasmoltovecchio—wouldinfactbeeightyinthefollowingyear.Hewasthelastofhisfamily,thewaiteradded—theyhadoncebeengreatandrichpeople—buthehadnodescendants;infactthewaitermentionedwithcomplacency,asifitwereastoryonwhichthelocalityprideditself,thattheContehadbeenunfortunateinlove,andhadnevermarried.
Theoldgentleman,however,seemedcheerfulenough;anditwasplainthathetookaninterestinthestrangers,andwishedtomaketheiracquaintance.Thiswassooneffectedbythefriendlywaiter;andafteralittletalktheoldmaninvitedthemtovisithisvillaandgardenwhichwerejustoutsidethewallsofthetown.Sothenextafternoon,whenthesunbegantodescend,andtheysawinglimpsesthroughdoor-waysandwindows,blueshadowsbeginningtospreadoverthebrownmountains,theywenttopaytheirvisit.Itwasnotmuchofaplace,asmall,modernized,stuccovilla,withahotpebblygarden,andinitastonebasinwithtorpidgold-fish,andastatueofDianaandherhoundsagainstthewall.Butwhatgaveaglorytoitwasagiganticrose-treewhichclamberedoverthehouse,almostsmotheringthewindows,andfillingtheairwiththeperfumeofitssweetness.Yes,itwasafinerose,theContesaidproudlywhentheypraisedit,andhewouldtelltheSignoraaboutit.Andastheysatthere,drinkingthewineheofferedthem,healludedwiththecheerfulindifferenceofoldagetohislove-affair,asthoughhetookforgrantedthattheyhadheardofitalready.
