Theconfidence-skilldisconnectionhasbeennamedtheDunning-Krugereffect,afterastudybysocialpsychologistsDavidDunningandJustinKruger.DunningandKrugerhadCornellundergraduatesperformtestsofhumor,logic,andgrammar,andthenratehowwelltheythinktheyperformedcomparedtoothersubjectsinthestudy.Theworstperformingsubjects,whosescoresputtheminthe12thpercentile,estimatedthattheyhadperformedinthe62ndpercentile.Summarizingthefindings,Dunningnoted,“Poorperformers—andweareallpoorperformersatsomethings—failtoseetheflawsintheirthinkingortheanswerstheylack.”Whenwethinkweareatourbestissometimeswhenweareatourobjectiveworst.
