Thispaperpresentsandevaluatestwocurrentadvancementsofcollaborativetechnologiesforarchitecturaldesign.Thepaperfocusesontechnologiesthatsupportsynchronousdesigncollaboration,inparticular,3Dvirtualworldsforsupportingremotedesigncollaboration,andtangibleuserinterfaces(TUIs)forenhancingco-locateddesigncollaboration.Bothtechnologiesenabledesignerstocollaboratebyinteractingwith3Dmodelsasthedesignrepresentations.Thepaperanalyzestheeffectofthesetechnologiesondesigncollaborationandcognitionthroughacomprehensiveinterpretationoftheresultsfromtwoindependentstudies.Thesetwostudies,usingprotocolanalysisandeachfocusingonadifferentmodeofdesigncollaboration,providethefoundationforcharacterizingthedesigners'cognition,communicationandinteractionwhenusingthenewtechnologies.The3Dvirtualworldsstudyinvestigatesremotedesigncollaborationina3Dvirtualworldinordertounderstandthechangesofdesignbehaviorwhendesignersarephysicallyremotebutvirtuallyco-locatedasavatarswithintheirdesignrepresentationintheformofa3Dmodel.TheTUIstudymeasurestheeffectofatabletopsystemthatintegratesTUIstogetherwithaugmentedreality(AR)ondesigners'cognitiveactivitiesanddesignprocessinco-locateddesigncollaboration.Finally,theanalysisandcomparisonoftheresultsconvergeinasetofrecommendationsforthefuturedevelopmentofcollaborativedesigntechnologies.

Abstract

Animportanttaskofagingresearchistofindgenesthatregulatelifespan.However,identificationofgenesrelatedtolongevity(referredtoaslongevitygeneshereafter)throughweb-labexperimentssuchasgeneticscreensisatediousandlabor-intensiveactivity.Developinganalgorithmtopredictlongevitygenesshouldfacilitateagingresearch.Inthispaper,wesystematicallyanalyzedpropertiesoflongevitygenesinCaenorhabditiselegansandfoundthat,whencomparedtogenesnotyetknowntobeinvolvedinlongevity,knownlongevitygenesdisplaythefollowingfeatures:

(i)longergenomicsequencesandproteinsequences,(ii)astrongertendencytoco-expresswithothergenesduringatransitionfromdauerstate(anextremelylonglifespan)tonon-dauerstate(anormallifespan),(iii)significantenrichmentincertainfunctionsandRNAiphenotypes,(iv)highersequenceconservation,and(v)higherinseveralnetworktopologicalfeaturessuchasdegreesinafunctionalinteractionnetwork.Basedonthesefeatures,wedevelopedanalgorithmtopredictlongevitygenesinC.elegansandobtained243novellongevitygeneswithaprecisionrateof0.85.Someofthepredictedgeneshavebeenvalidatedbypublishedarticlesorwetlabexperiments.Thecontributionofeachfeaturetothepredictedresultswasalsoevaluated.
