ThereportisfromtheInternationalUnionfortheConservationofNatureandanorganizationknownasTraffic.

MostAfricanrhinopoachingisinZimbabweandSouthAfrica.ExpertsfoundthattwohundredtenrhinoswereillegallykilledinSouthAfricainthelastthreeyears.

TheestimateforZimbabweistwohundredthirty-five.Thesituationthreatensgainsmadeinitsrhinopopulationsinthenineteennineties.Inthelasttwoyears,onlysixpeoplewerefoundguiltyofpoachingchargesoutofforty-onearrested.

Intwothousandone,sixty-eightpercentofAfricanrhinohornsenteringillegaltradewererecovered.Bythisyear,nineoutoftenwereheadingtoAsianmarketswithoutinterference.

ThereportsayspoachingandillegalhorntradehasincreasedinSouthAfricaevenwithnewmeasuresagainstit.

Addingtotheproblem,poacherstodayaremoreskilledatkillingrhinos,andnotonlywithguns.Theyalsousequietermethods,likeveterinarydrugs,poisonandcrossbows.

AninternationalagreementonprotectingendangeredanimalsandplantsprovidesforsporthuntingofwhiterhinosinAfrica.Butthehornsoftenenterillegalmarkets.

Notallthenewsisbad,however.Thereportnotesthatrhinopopulationsareincreasinginsomeareas.TheseincludebothwhiterhinosandblackrhinosinthewildinAfrica.

Africahadanestimatedseventeenthousandwhiterhinosandfourthousandblackrhinosasoftwoyearsago.CurrentestimatesforAsiaarearoundthreethousandrhinos.Butevenwithpoaching,growthisreportedinsomeareasofIndiaandNepal.

Wildlifeactivistsareurginggovernmentstodomoretofightrhinopoaching.

ThereportwaspresentedtotheorganizationknownasCITES.CITESistheConventiononInternationalTradeinEndangeredSpeciesofWildFaunaandFlora.ThenextconferenceofcountriesthatarepartiestotheagreementisinMarchinDoha,Qatar.
