MostoftheknowledgewehaveofancientMayalifecomesfromthewritingsofaFranciscan戴果狄兰达monkwhocametoYucatanin1549.
HeusedtoobservetheMayaandnotedtheiruseofglyph,andlatertriedtotranslatethemintoSpanish.
Inhiswritings,heestablishedthebasefordecipheringtheglyphswhichwereamixtureofsyllablesandwords.

Theglyphwritingwasforgottenaftertheburningofthecodices.50yearsafter矛德斯雷photoswerepublished,theywerealsousedbyscholarstostudytheglyphandinspiredmanyexpeditionstotheregion.
Asthefirstglyphweredecodeditwasbelievedthatallthetextswerereligiousinnatureconcernedwiththepassageoftimeandtheobservationofthestars.ItwasthoughttheMayawerepeacefulpeoplelivinginharmonywithnaturescatteredinthejungle.
In1946,adiscoverywasmadewhichcastmorelightonthemysteryoftheMaya.Thetheorieswereabouttodramaticallychange.
lspentmorethantwoyearsintheregionwiththeLacandonlndianfilmingtheirdailylife.lnotedthatfromtimetotimethemenwoulddisappearforacoupleofday.Theyweremakingapilgrimagetoatemplebutitwasimpossibletofollowthem,solgavethemshotgunswithasmellamountpowderandleftforamonthtwo.Whenlreturntheysaid:
