Nooneisgladtohearthathisbodyhastobecutopenbyasurgeon(外科医生)andpartofittakenout.Today,however,weneedn'tworryaboutfeelingpainduringtheoperation.Thesickpersonfallsintoakindofsleep,andwhenheawakes,theoperationisfinished.Butthesehappyconditionsarefairlynew.Itisnotmanyyearssinceamanwhohadtohaveoperationfeltallitspain.
Longago,operationhadusuallytobedonewhilethesickmancouldfeeleverything.Thesickmanhadtobehelddownonatablebyforcewhilethedoctorsdidtheirbestforhim.Hecouldfeelallthepainifhislegorarmwasbeingcutoff,andhisfearfulcriesfilledtheroomandtheheartsofthosewhowatched.
Soonafter1770,JosephPriestleydiscoveredagaswhichisnowcalled"laughinggas".LaughinggasbecameknowninAmerica.Youngmenandwomenwenttopartiestotryit.Mostofthemspenttheirtimelaughing,butonemanataparty,HoraceWells,noticedthatpeopledidn'tseemtofeelpainwhentheywereusingthisgas.Hedecidedtomakeanexperimentonhimself.Heaskedafriendtohelphim.Wellstooksomeofthegas,andhisfriendpulledoutoneofWell'steeth.Wellsfeltnopainatall.Ashedidn'tknowenoughaboutlaughinggas,hegaveamanlessgasthanheshouldhave.Themancriedoutwithpainwhenhistoothwasbeingpulledout.Wellstriedagain,butthistimehegavetoomuchofthegas,andthemandied.Wellsneverforgotthisterribleevent.

Inhighschool,MissJordandecidedtobecomealawyer.AtTexasSouthernUniversityshestudiedpoliticalscienceandhistoryandgraduatedin1956atthetopofherclass.By1959shehadearnedalawdegreefromBostonUniversity.
MissJordanbeganpracticinglawatherparents'diningroomtable.Threeyearslatersheopenedherownoffice.
TherestlessMissJordanfirstbrokeintopoliticsin1966,becomingthefirstblackwomanelectedtotheTexassenate.Afteranimpressiverecordasastatesenator,sheenteredthenationalscene.
In1972shewonaseatintheU.S.HouseOfRepresentatives.Duringhertimeinofficeshewasdevotedtohelpingminorities,thepoor,andtheelderly."Myapproachistorespectthehumanityofeverybody,"sheoncesaid.That'sjustthewayBarbaraJordanwas.
