Thisyear,theworldmarkedthe250thanniversaryofthebirthofAustriancomposerWolfganAmadeusMozart.Therehavebeencelebrationsofthecomposer’sworkallyearlong.

OnDecember5,musichousesaroundtheworldobservedtheanniversaryofthecomposer’sdeath.

ThatmusicisfromMozart’sRequiem,aworkthecomposerdidnotcompletebeforehisdeath.ARequiemismusicwritteninhonorofsomeonewhohaddied.ManypeopleconsiderthemusicanditssubjectmattertoaddtothemysterysurroundingMozart’sdeath.CoulditbethatthecomposersensedhisapproachingdeathfromfeverandwroteRequieminhisownhonor?

Thereisnodoubt,however,thatthemusicofMozarthasmoretodowithlifeandhappinessthanwithsadnessormystery.

Mozartwroteandperformedmusicinthesecondhalfofthe18thcentury.Duringthisperiod,Europeanmusiciansperformedforkings,queensandotherroyalty.Musiciansoftendependedonwealthypeoplecalledpatronstosupportthem.

Mozart,alongwithhisfriendJosephHaydn,becamethebestexampleoftheclassicalstyle.----theimportantperformancemusicofhistime.Todaypeopleoftenusetheword“classical”todescribeotherkindsofmusicwrittenforandperformedbyanorchestra.

SomemusiccriticsconsiderSymphonyTwenty-FiveinGMinortobefirstworkshowingMozart’sfullability.Hewas17whenhewroteit.Seewhatyouthinkofthisyoungman’sskills.

Theword“effortless”isoftenusedtodescribethemusicalcompositionsofMozart.MusiccamesonaturallytothechildborninSalzburg,Austria,in1756.

WoflgangwasthelastofsevenchildrenborntoLeopoldMozartandAnnaMariaPertl.Fiveofthechildrendiedwhilebabies.

OnlyWolfgangandhisoldersister,MariaAnna,survived.Bothwereextremelygiftedmusiciansfromaveryyoungage.ThechildrentraveledwiththeirparentsandperformedacrossEurope.

Wolfgang’sfatherwasawell-knownviolinteacher.TheyearWolfgangwasborn,Leopoldpublishedapopularbooknviolinplaying.SoonWolfgangstartedtoshowanunusualcommandofmanyinstruments.

Bytheageofeight,heplayedthepiano---sometimeswithhiseyescovered.Healsoplayedtheorganandviolinverywell.Heshowedanunderstandingofmusicofamucholderperson.

TravelenrichedtheeducationoftheyoungMozart.Hisfatherworkedinmanyofthegreatcitiesof18thcentury

Europe.ThefamilyvistitedLondon,Munich,Vienna,PragueandParis.

MozartmarriedConstanzeWeberintheAustriancapitalin1782.hedescribedhiswifeashaving“plentyofcommonbutonlytwosurvived.Theywerehappytogether,althoughtheirlifewassometimesdifficult.

InVienna,Mozartwrotehisgreatestopera---musicalplaysperformedwithanorchestra.Hisworkswereperformedinothercitiesaswell.HisMarriageofFigarowassopopularinPraguethathewasaskedtowriteanoperaespeciallyforamusichousethere.

TheoperahecomposedwasDonGiovanni,consideredbymanytobehisbest.Theoperaisbasedonthestoryoftheloverandfighter.DonJuan,bytheSpanishwriterTirsodeMolina.Inthisscene,thespiritisamanDonGiovannihadkilledlongagoreturnsto

theworldofthelivingtoseizehimanddraghimdowntohell.

EventshavebeenheldalloverEuropeandintheUnitedStatestocelebratethe250thanniversaryofMozart’sbirth.Salzburgaloneheldabout500eventstocelebratethefamouscomposer.Viennaspentabout60milliondollarsinpublicandprivatemoneyforitsMozartcelebration.

Inreality,thereisanongoingMozartcelebrationallthetime.Mozart’smusicisperformedaroundtheworld.

MozartdiedonDecember5,1791.hewasonly35.hehadcomposedmorethan600piecesofmusic.SomeexpertsconsiderMozartthegreatestcomposerofalltime.

Neartheendofhislife.MozartcomposedtheForty-FirstSymphony.Afterhisdeath,itcametobeknownasJupiter,possiblyinpraisefitsstyleandexpression.CriticsconsideritoneofMozart
