Microsofthasbuiltenergysavingfeaturesdirectlyintoitsproductsandofferssolutionssuchasvirtualizationandcollaborationtools.Virtualizationproductsreduceelectricalpowerconsumptionwithindatacenters,reducehardwareacquisitioncosts,automatedesktopandservermanagement,andcentralizeapplicationdeployment.AtMicrosoft,theuseofcollaborationproductsandtechnologies,suchasvideoconferencing,MicrosoftOfficeLiveMeeting,MicrosoftOfficeCommunicationsServer,MicrosoftOfficeGroove®,andMicrosoftOfficeSharePoint®Serverhavereducedtheneedforbusinesstravel,savingmoneyandreducinggreenhousegasemissions.
Microsofthascommittedtothegoalofreducingitsowncarbonemissionsperunitofrevenuebyatleast30percentcomparedwith2007levelsby2012,andhasimplementedsupportingenvironmentalsustainabilityinitiatives,suchas:

BeforetheavailabilityofConfigurationManager2007R3,MicrosoftITrecognizedtheneedforacomprehensivepowermanagementsolution.MSITreliedprimarilyonprovidingrecommendedclientpowersavingsettingsthroughstandardinstallationimages,whichwereincludedonnewdesktopandlaptopcomputers.Thesameoperatingsysteminstallationimagesarealsoavailablefordownloadandinstallationfromotherlocationsonthecorporatenetwork.
Becauseofthegrowingimportanceofenvironmentalsustainability,MSITmadequeriestodeterminethepercentageofusersthatwerechangingtheirstandardsettings.MSITfoundthatupto80percentofuserswerechangingtheirpowermanagementsettingswithin30days.
Withtheexceptionofaone-timeprogramthatenforceddisplayormonitortime-outsettingsmanagedthroughaGroupPolicyPreferenceModeavailableinWindowsVista,MicrosoftITdidnothaveaformalimplementationofclientpowermanagement.
