Thiswashischance.Hefinallyfoundaprofessionthatwouldleadtohislifework—makingtheworldabetterplaceforpoorpeople.Thenewspapersenthimtopoliceheadquartersforstories.Therehesawlifeatitsworst,especiallyinaverypoorpartofNewYorkwhichwasknownasMulberryBend.PeoplehadnowayoffindingouthowterriblethelivesofpeoplewereinMulberryBend.Butasanewspaperreporter,hecouldfindthetruth.Andhewrotemanystoriesaboutthelifethere.Riisstartedapersonalwaragainstslumhouses(贫民窟),thesorthesawinMulberryBend.Healsoworkedtogetlawsagainstchildlabor,andmadesurethattheselawswereobeyed.Andhehelpedestablishcentersforolderpeople.
Hisbook,HowtheOtherHalfLives,waspublishedin1890.Hebecamefamous.TheodoreRoosevelt,presidentoftheUnitedStates,calledRiisthemostusefulcitizeninNewYorkCity.Riiscontinuedtowriteaboutconditionsthatwereinneedofmajorreform.Histwelvebooks,includingChildrenofthePoor,helpedimproveconditionsinthecity.Thebooksalsomadehimpopularasaspeakerinothercities.JacobRiis’sconcernforthepoorkepthimsobusywritingandspeakingaroundthecountrythatheruinedhishealth.Hediedin1914.
