“Ourfindingshavehelpedtoidentifythekindsofjobdemandsthatpreservememoryandthinkinglateron.”“However,”Headded,“whileitistruethatpeoplewhohavehighercognitiveabilitiesaremorelikelytogetmorecomplexjobs,therestillseemstobeasmalladvantagegainedfromthesecomplexjobsforlaterthinkingskills.”

DrSimonRidley,headofresearchatAlzheimer’sResearchUK,saidthestudyaddedtothegrowingevidenceaboutfactorsthataffectedbrainhealthasweaged.

“Keepingthebrainactivethroughoutlifecouldbehelpfulanddifferenttypesofworkmayplayarole.However,it’simportanttonotethatthisstudypointstoasmallandsubtleassociationbetweenoccupationandlater-lifecognitionratherthanofferingproofthatpeople’soccupationhasadirectinfluence.”
