Besidesteaching,Duncansanginseveraloperaswithperformerswhowereallblack.Butitseemedthathealwayswouldbeknownmainlyasaconcertartist.However,hislifetookadifferentturninthemiddle1930s.Atthattime,thefamousAmericanmusicwriterGeorgeGershwinwaslookingforsomeonetoplayaleadingpartinhisnewworkPorgyandBess.Themusiccritic(评论家)oftheNewYorkTimesnewspapersuggestedToddDuncan.Duncanhadalmostdecidednottotryforthepartasheknewitwouldnotbeeasytogetit.Buthechangedhismind.HesangapiecefromanItalianoperaforGershwin.HehadsungonlyafewminuteswhenGershwinofferedhimthepart.HebecamefamousbecauseofthepartinPorgyandBess.
