  SurveyresultsindicatethatsmokingandalcoholandmarijuanauseincreasedamongresidentsofManhattanduringthe5~8weeksaftertheterroristattacksontheWorldTradeCenterwhichtookplaceonSeptember11,2001.Almostonethirdofthenearly1,000personsinterviewedreportedanincreaseduseofalcohol,marijuana,orcigarettesfollowingtheSeptember11thattacks.Thelargestincreasewasinalcoholuse.AboutonefourthoftherespondentssaidtheyweredrinkingmorealcoholintheweeksafterSeptember11;about10%reportedanincreaseinsmoking,and3.2%saidtheyhadincreasedtheiruseofmarijuana.

  TheinvestigatorsfoundsurveyparticipantsbyrandomlydialingNewYorkCityphonenumbersandscreenedpotentialrespondentsforManhattanresidentslivinginareasclosetotheWorldTradeCenter.Interviewswereconductedwith988individualsbetweenOctober16andNovember15,2001.Participantswereaskedabouttheircigarettesmoking,alcoholdrinking,andmarijuanausehabitsbeforeandafterSeptember11.DuringtheweekpriortoSeptember11,2001,22.6%oftheparticipantsreportedsmokingcigarettes,59.1%drinkingalcohol,and4.4%usingmarijuana.AfterSeptember11th,23.4%reportedsmokingcigarettes,64.4%drinkingalcohol,and5.7%smokingmarijuana.Amongthosewhosmoked,almost10%reportedsmokingatleastanextrapackofcigarettesaweekandamongthosewhodrankalcohol,morethan20%reportedimbibingatleastoneextradrinkaday.

  Theresearchersfoundthatpeoplewhoreportedanincreaseinsubstanceabuseweremorelikelytosufferfromposttraumaticstressdisorder(PTSD)andfromdepression.PeoplewhoreportedanincreaseincigarettesmokingormarijuanausewerealsomorelikelytohavebothPTSDanddepression,whilethosewhoreportedanincreaseinalcoholuseweremorelikelytohavedepressiononly.PersonswhowerelivingclosertotheWorldTradeCenterweremorelikelytoincreasetheircigarettesmoking,butotherfactorssuchasbeingdisplacedfromhome,losingpossessionsduringtheattacks,orbeinginvolvedintherescueeffortswerenotconsistentlyassociatedwithincreasedsubstanceuse.Symptomsofpanicattackwereassociatedwithanincreaseintheuseofallsubstances.

  Increaseinsubstanceabusedidnotdiffersignificantlybetweenmenandwomenoramongracialorethnicgroups.Demographicfactorssuchasage,maritalstatus,andincomeseemedtoplayamorecriticalroleindeterminingiftheeventsofSeptember11thledtoanincreaseinsubstanceuse.
